Funny how life is one big circle. Guys neck down 284 brass to 6.5. Now they are necking 6.5 back to 284 lol.
Not me I love my 6.5x 284 and would not change a thing
I had to do something with my 284 brass.....6x284 got the nod lol

More like 200- there's no replacement for displacement. Guys made the same claim of creedmoor almost being a prc when hornady released those factory 143@2950. But if you fill a prc, or norma up with rl26 you'll outshine the creed in kind.
I hope to let you know in 2022 as to "F" Class between the .284 and 6.5 X284.
Originally, we were going to build a straight 1.25" x 31" in 284 Win for "F' Class. History and a track record to stand behind the 284 win. However, been shooting 6.5 bullets for years and the 6.5mm is a very good bullet "Ballistically". It has a history and track record much longer than the .284 win. The 284 win 180gr BC 660 @2,800 (varies with powder and bullet type)
Look at all the "F" Class records made with the .308. I shoot a .260 with 142 SMK at 1K and it works well. There are quite a few 6.5-06 that have been and are winning at the range. The 6.5X284 and 6.5-06 are almost the same. I can build anything I want due to having the equipment and machinery to make almost anything. I personally think that using a 6.5mm bullet 142 gr with a BC 626 @3,000+ fps or a 150gr BC 713. @2,800+ will buck the wind fairly well. Velocity is important, but accuracy is more important.
Currently building a 6.5X284 with a Krieger SS .256 Bore 4 Grove Cut Barrel 1:8 twist. Diameter 1.25" X 31". Have custom Reamer from JGS matched to MY Lapua Brass seated with Sierra 142gr Match King. Also having Whidden making custom Bushing Dies from fired formed brass from the chamber I cut. BAT MB Dual Port Single shot Action. McMillan XIT Stock 3 way adjustable Butt & Cheek piece. Putting a Nightforce ATACR 7-35x56mm on top with SPUR rings. Finishing with a Bix N Andy or Trigger Tech trigger -have both in several models.
Also Building some rifles in 6mm BR & 338 LMAI with almost the same type components.
FPS varies with powder used as well as bullet BC depending on Berger Target or Sierra Match King.
It's a pretty close match up.
As far as hunting cartridges go (not throwing all the 6.5 cartridges with Magnum versions in the mix-we would have a hundred to go over):
You can put the 6.5X55 Sweed/6.5 CM/.260 Rem in one bucket and if you want a little more power for hunting 6.5PRC/6.5-06/6.5X284 in another bucket. More or less a personal preference.
Just my thoughts and opinions, we all have our ideas and personal preferences.

I'm very familar with the history of Fclass and what wins. The 6.5x284 hasn't been relevant in Fclass for years. Barrel life suffers at twice the rate as a 284, you may as well chamber up two if you plan on shooting many matches. A 6.5x284 won't shoot inside a 7mm for wind drift or accuracy, and I know for fact a 7mm holds most of the major records in Fopen. That said you might get by at the club level and maybe even at the state level. But at the national level unless conditions are very mild for 3-4 days and in the hands of a accomplished shooter, I have my doubts a 6.5x284 could crack the top ten.

2 Grendels( CZ 527 and BCA barreled AR) 2 6.5x55 sweedes( Tikka and 1918 Gustaf) and a savage axis with a 6.5-284 barrel.
Taken quite a few critters over the years with the little 6.5s but the 6.5-284 just like the two before it have been very disappointing.
