Anyone out there shooting a 257 and Retumbo or am I looking for some thing that just doesn't work well. I'm shooting 110 gr Accubonds over 7828 with Nosler brass fired by Fed 215's. Looking to improve on a good thing.

Thanks

Tried the 110 accubond with 7828SSC and H4831SC, but results less than stellar. Retumbo loads went south quickly with just slight powder increments. Now shooting Berger 115 with H1000 getting sub-1/2MOA @ 200 yards. Rarely do two rifles like the same loads so test some bullet/powder combos. Good luck

To be quite honest my 257 Roy is actually a Remington 700 CDL. Love that cartridge though. Just looking for more. Haven't shot much RL-25 with the AB's, maybe thats the recipe ??

i think you'll have a hard time matching the velocity of 7828 with Retumbo.

that said, ..... i just prepped brass to be filled with Retumbo in my 270 WBY this afternoon. Again i dont suspect it will match my 7828 load, but i have it on hand and want to try it with some 150s

025, perhaps you could post results of your 270 WBY loads. Yesterday I loaded 150 Bergers with IMR7977, H1000 and Retumbo. Won't get to the range till late next week. Thanks

When i get the range time , i will. :) You do the same. Plan to chronograph, correct?

I know you want information on retumbo which I have not tried with my 257 weatherby.

Seeing others are mentioning different powders I'll add some more. You might want to try RL-25 or my new favorite RL-33

Three of my friends and I used RL-25 with 115 bergers. I had to switch to 110 accubonds because my 3 groove lilja became so worn it would destroy the thin jacketed berger bullets.

This is from my notes:

257 Weatherby: custom reamer with 100 thousandths jump to lands, 28" #5 fluted SS Lilja 3 groove barrel, moly coated 110 accubond, .015" off rifling.

Original load 75.5 gr of RL-25 vel 3615 fps

RL-33:

80 gr 3432 fps
81 gr 3525
82 gr 3559
83 3625 which slightly faster than old load with RL-25
83.5 3674 fps shot well CURRENTLY USING THIS LOAD
84 gr 3704 fps shot well
84.5 gr 3735 slight signs of pressure on one case of four this is max case capacity with drop tube

I know it is fast. I hope anyone trying the load works up carefully. We seasoned handloaders know that each rifle is an individual and performance can vary.

I believe the reason it is fast is moly coated bullets, RL-33, 3 groove barrel, its length and the barrel is quite worn. It has close to 1000 rounds through it. It looks horrible when viewed with the bore scope so I know it might be partially washed out helping to mitigate pressure. It still shoots with bullet holes touching at 100 yds but it will foul after 20 or so rounds and it a real PITA to clean.

Throat angle is not Weatherby's but 1 1/2 degrees and it is shorter so I am capable of getting close. Magazine constraints had the 115 Bergers jumping .100'' to the lands.
