i used a 243 back in the day, probably shot 25-30 deer with it. never had too much of a blood trail. never needed it. would agree with what's been said, a bullet that comes apart will give a bigger exit hole. in recent years been using a 6wssm built by our very own Kevin Cram. it can shoot more accurately than i can hold it. anyways, the 105 a-max puts some nice holes in deer. lots of blood.
