I have just purchased a Stainless Tikka T3 and have a gunsmith fitting an 8 twist barrel to it for me. The rifle is for long range varminting and I hope to use 75 and 80 grain Amax and 77 grain Sierra matchkings through it, I am not sure which powder would give me the best results so your real life experiences with this calibre/barrel/bullet combination would be very gratefully received.

Quickload is suggesting H414, RL17, and HH100V.

I have had great luck with h4831sc, and 75 gr amax. You might give that a try.

Thank you for your reply, could you tell me please,

  • What speeds are you achieving.
  • What is your cartridge overall length.
  • How tight are your groups at 100/200yds.

Many Thanks

Winchester brass, 75gr Amax at 2.605, h4831sc at 36.2 gr at 2900fps.
Gun is new best group of 5 shots is .629 at 100 yards
I havent tested at 200 other than killing coyotes. Hope this helps

H414 will push the 75 grain Amax to 3500 but the 37.5 grain load proved to be too much for any kind of heat but it does just as well with 36.5 and is just little slower. Unfortunately H414 doesn't do well in a hot barrel or a hot day but under 70* it does very well..........turns the 22-250 into a very different round than 55 grainers!
Been meaning to redo the load and see if I can get a different powder and/or bullet to work better but when I had it built many years ago H414 and 75A Maxes was by far the best combo.
