My wife and i both drew bull tags for muzzleloading season this year. I was hoping for only one tag but we both got them. We hunted in sw Co. Area 71. We hunted in deep every day, 3 to 6 miles on on foot which is a bunch for Iowa flat landers in their 50's. We only saw 6 cows and this 6 x 6. We only ran into 2 other hunters. Others we talked to had tons of dirt bikes around them as the Telluride area closed the roads to the dirt bikes.
On day 4 I heard a a bugle , only the second one of the season. Looked up and saw him walking out in a meadow angling kinda towards me. He stopped at 144 yds. I shot and he walked towards me. I thought i had hit him a bit far back the way he walked. I reloaded as fast as i could. He then stopped at 40 yds. Put a second Powerbelt in his neck angling in his chest. He was facing directly at me. He took off away from me, stopped at 134. Shot him again , took off, ran in trees. He only went 50 yds.
I was out of reloads, who ever shoots 4 times with a muzzleloader? Boy, I'm changing my ways now. Lol. It was a pretty exciting 2 or 3 minutes! Had to wait for my wife to bring me one her reloads to follow him up. We both shoot 120 gr of pyrodex and 346 Powerbelt bullets. We were 6 miles in when we shot him. Had an outfitter pack him out. I real only goal this year was for my wife to get her first elk but she didn't get the chance. So it was kinda bittersweet to shoot him but she wasnt going to see him at all and we had worked our tails off to hard to pass him up. Anyone who has hunted in the San Juans can relate. We are going to start over on preference point again. 20190917_182854.jpg 20190917_182854.jpg

Does CO have a lead-only restriction on projectiles? My experience with powerbelts was frustrating, but there aren't too many other options in Idaho.

OP, what is a 346gr power belt? or did you use one of the 348gr bullets like the platinum series
