Anyone running a 300 wsm 18" or close to that barrel length? Thinkin of making a shorty to run suppressed just curious what velocities I can expect with 200 grain bullet

What bullet?

I cut down a 300 wsm to 18.5 before re barreling to 270 wsm. I'll be going back to a 300 wsm in a few hundred rounds.

As a 26 it did just under 3k with 200 partitions, cut down to 18.5 it lost 240fps. Caveat being the 208 a max it struggled to do 2850 in 26 inch tube and was under 2450 in the 18.5 inch trim. 150-190s lost the least, next barrel will be a 18.5 inch 300 wsm with hopes it does good with 165 to 190s.

Tldr. Had one, switch to more overbore wish I hadn't and will build another 18 inch 300 wsm.

I've got some 205 bergers

There's a guy on another forum running a factory tikka cut down to 18" with 200gr eldx's at 2790fps so a custom Bbl and longer throat should be a little faster.
I wanted to try it myself with a tikka but I already have a 16" 30/06 that runs 215s&208s at 2415fps with h4350 or 2500 with rl17. It does well out to 600-700 yards. A 18" 300wsm would be a great all around package in a mid length action. And if you want to run a short action the 300SS is a good option if your open to wildcats as Rich mentioned.

I have clients running the 205 with great results on game in the 300 SS. 2800+ with 18" barrels in a short action

That's a lot of zip in a short action 30 cal with 205s. Don't know the powder differential over a 300 wsm but I don't think the wsm could hit 2800 with any load in the 205+ class bullets in the shorter tube.

correction: the 300 Max runs over 2800 with an 18" barrel and the SS is about 2775. A 20" will run over 2800 in the SS

I cut my 300wsm T3x to 18". The 1:11" cutdown factory barrel produced velocities of:
3039fps with HH160
2686fps with terminal Ascent 175
2648fps with accubond 180

I used H4350 for all loads. I am sure I could have pushed the terminal ascent and accubond to a higher velocity, but I hunt with the hammers.
