Your right you have a chance to find it on the shelves but at least out where I live (Montana) it's getting tougher and tougher to find it in a store...

Yea -- I live in Oregon but I've traveled a lot in my job and love Montana -- my favorite state! Especially the many smaller towns in your state! I reload for every caliber I shoot, so not finding 338 Win Mag on retail shelves doesn't apply to me -- except -- if I were to fly somewhere and my ammo got lost due to our trusted airlines (no -- I don't trust them)! Assuming my rifle didn't end up in Timbuktu like my ammo, I'd hope I could find some factory ammo at my hunting destination! If not, I'd resign myself to taking lots of pictures of game animals and be happy with that!

Apply your personal reasons to the 308 vs 30-06 discussion. If you like 250s, go
Win mag. If you like 210s, go 338/06.
I use 250s in my 338 win for elk. I quit using it on sheep, deer and pronghorn years ago when I shot 210 and 225 partitions. Lots of extra tissue damage.
The Whelen is my response to that level of power because .358 bullets work better than .338 on tissue, and my 35 Whelen kicks a lot less than my 338 win.
But you cant shoot .338 bullets in a .358 bore.

IMO 338-06 ai makes no sense when 338 rpm exists.

Most of my guns have never seen a factory load and never will.
I am interested enough to inquire about the 35 whelen sucking. Short range? Low velocity? Not enough components. Why does it suck????
That's the route I went. Still haven't had time to shoot it. I thought the RPM would make a nice back up elk rifle to my 338 RUM.

So, if my 338-06 shoots a 210 gr TTSX at 2,800 FPS and the 338 RPM shoots a 225 gr TTSX at 2,800, is there an animal out there that will know the difference?

No, but theyre not going to know with a 338 fed and a 210 at ~2600 either.
Maybe you want more sd than a 200-210 has. Maybe you want more BC. Maybe you want that 210 over 3000fps.
If you're having a barrel made anyways and you handload which seem to both be true here, 338 rpm brass has Peterson and weatherby. 338-06 has weatherby. And you dont have to fireform for AI while being faster than the AI.
Also fits standard bolt faces, standard -06 magazines and you get 3+1 like an -06 rather than 2+1 like a WM.

If you handload it's irrelevant. Buy a barrels worth of brass when you order the barrel.How many more weeks do you honestly think the 338 RPM will exist

I've been able to find some produced by Wby, I think there is a boutique ammo producer or two who makes it as well.
Honestly, it's not needed unless traveling out of the Lower 48, even then it's not mandatory
