What makes your decision to sell a rifle?

I do sometimes sell a firearm, but mostly I will trade for something else. I will purchase firearm parts that are sold in lots, to get what I want for a build and wind up with several firearms of the same caliber and or manufacture.

I went with a co-worker to the range, and he tried my 6.5 X 284 Winchester that I had built and wanted to take it home. When we finished, he wanted that rifle so give him a number and to my surprised he said yes and wrote me a check on the spot. Later I got a factory Savage Model 12 chamber in 6.5 X 284 and turn out to be a better shooter then my build.
I season I purchased a 3.5in 12 gauge to hunt geese with. When the season ended my shoulder was never the same sold that thing just as fast as I could.

I've bought and sold probably 15-20 handguns and rifles over the years. Now, I know what it takes mentally to buy one which is typically the expectation of doing something awesome with it, or it just feels right or something like that.
When it comes to selling these things I can contemplate for months whether to sell or not. Was it a rush to judgement to purchase or just not the right thing once you shoot it? Just curious as to why some of ya'll decide to sell and we're happy to do so. And yea, I know, " Don't ever sell a gun". And yea, I know, we all have the one we shouldn't have sold. Because it shoots like crap is acceptable but not the only answer.

Sold all of my long action guns. Going through the reloading supplies now.
 
If miss a deer, with a rifle gonna sell or trade er in. Remember that happenD in a blizzard once , back in the 80's.
 
I like to try new stuff. Sometimes it doesn't work out. Too much recoil, too heavy, or bored with it. If I can't get it to shoot well enough I might send it down the road. When I was younger, I would try a firearm and after a couple years I would trade for something new. I have a few I kept that are very accurate or just work really well for the hunting I do. I've tried most actions and a lot of calibers and a lot of different scopes. You don't like everything.
 
Being flat *** broke sent the first one out the door. A couple of fine shooting 708s have found homes with new shooters. A couple of dogs that wouldn't hunt left and there was that beautiful Cooper that was just too Purdy for me🤠
 
Usually when the safe is full and I see a gun that has never been fired or has not been out of the safe in 10-15 years it's time to make room for new ones. I sold a nieghbor 9 guns that were more than 10 years old and never fired. Still have several like that in the safe
 
Last three guns I sold.
Kimber 84L 30-06 and Montana Rifle Co 7RM - sold as part of the Ramsey get out debt plan and was the year I was diagnosed with MS. Kept my old 270 because it has sentimental value and it's worth almost nothing.

Browning Citori CXS - used to fund suppressor, scope, and tripod . Had it for 4 years and as much as I wanted it to work it just didn't fit me and I didn't shoot it as well has my old Benelli M2.

In my 20s and early 30s I was too broke to have more than one or two toys at a time in addition to the base guns that will never leave. So I would very much buy and sell on an impulse or boredom. Let some really nice things slip away and also sent dogs down the road. Still think about the Savage 99 1950s era that I let get away. Early enough to still have dark walnut and nice metal but new enough it was factory drilled and tapped.
 
I've sold(And bought) quite a few firearms over the past 60 years. Most all the firearms I sold were due to fading appeal of either the firearm, or its particular application. Over time I developed specific requirements that perhaps wouldn't have been possible without living with a variety of firearms for some period of time. For the last couple of decades, I have sold very few, The ones I have are my "keepers'.
 
Easy for me.

If it no longer offers a specific need (that may have been surpassed via the acquisition of a different firearm).

If it hasn't been used at least once in a year.
 
I do it all the time.

My next one will be my new Horizon Carbon Venatic 7mmPRC. FANTASIC rifle I bought for a specific hunt the first of January. Nilgai on The Kennedy Ranch in South Texas. The 7mmPRC is too much gun for my normal targets, whitetail deer, hogs, etc. SO I will be posting my 7mmPRC for sale right after my hunt.

I'm notorious for buying a new rifle, setting it up, shooting it, sell it. lose money 🤣
