Sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong

About 4 months ago I introduced y'all to my new Boykin/English Lab mix. She's got the makings to become a very good duck, dove and blood tracking dog. She's very "Birdy" and has an excellent nose. She is absolutely one of the hardest headed dogs I've ever worked with. This includes my Chesapeake.
This is what happened when she stuck her nose where it didn't belong. A small copperhead bit her on the side of her snout about an inch from her nose. This was taken 20 minutes later.

She's fine now after a trip to the vet. Anti venom, vitamin K, antibiotics, and prednisone. $600. I didn't think she needed to go until it started swelling and she started gagging a bit, which wasn't long.

As far as Vet bills goes, IMO for that you got off easy with a $600 bill in 2026. Good chunk of change; however, your pet made it. I know people who have spent a lot more on pets with an unfavorable outcome.

About 20 years ago, I spent $300 [unsuccessfully] on cat that had a bad reaction to Amitriptyline after being taken off Diazepam. It was an adult male that had a spraying issue after being neutered. The pharmaceuticals calmed him down and stopped that issue.

I follow Python Cowboy and his dogs get bit by quite a bit by cottonmouths while working. A little more potent than a copperhead but somewhat similar. He has a post about dealing with the bites which may be applicable for the people on here. Not negating a vet but depending on the severity of a bite and the confidence of the owner might be relevant. I am also not a vet so I cannot comment on that aspect of method.

I was surprised the vet bill wasn't more. My wife had just taken a load of clothes downstairs to wash them and the snake was 3 feet from the washroom door under an upside down trash can lid on the concrete.. I'm glad it wasn't a rattler or cottonmouth as we live on the bank of a black water river and have plenty of all three. But copperheads are what we see really close to the house. With this snake obviously being young I was a bit more concerned. Young snakes can't regulate their venom output during a bite like adults. They give you the full load. In two days the swelling was gone. She's a happy puppy again. Did she learn a lesson. I doubt it! She is very hard headed!!!

My last dog learned quick when she invaded the personal space of a snapping turtle and got a big bite on the nose. I tried to warn her. She never got real close to turtles, snakes, or frogs after that.

Oh no. Shorts and flip flops both times. Now that I have snake PTSD, I'm at least using a flashlight while taking the garbage out.
I do use snake chaps during the fall hunts but my powerful flip flops are my go to at home. I'm a knuckle head, I know.

Farming and hunting here in cottonmouth crossing, I'd be wise to be more careful.
They don't get a pass, timber rattlers, cottonmouths, copperheads. Ever!
