Not talking bayed animals or treed but just free, traveling big game. I have two I'll mention.

The first was a big doe that I shot directly under my lock on at 14 ft. I had to lean out and make sure my toes were out of the way. Her head filled my scope up. 270 win bullet right between the ears. No tracking involved!

The second was at 4 ft. running wide open. We were running dogs. This whitetail buck surprised me. I put a full load of 18 00 pellets from a 3.5" 12 gauge shotgun right thru the crease. 1" in, 1 1/4" out. There was Winchester Grex buffer scattered throughout the wound channel when we cleaned him. He slid about 10 feet and tried to get up. I doubt he could've gone anywhere but my lab mix that was with me 24/7/365 caught him just as he finished his slide. He was gone in under a minute.

I shot a Southern Whitetail buck about 3 feet from the base of the tree my stand was in, but I was about 18-20 feet up that tree sitting in a stand and had to lean way over to shoot straight down.

I've shot a couple of other deer that were 3-5 yards from me while I was sitting by a tree, and I killed a wild hog at about 10 feet with a quick drawn 44 mag handgun. It was in full charge in some tall grass, and I was trying to quickly walk backwards while reaching for the revolver. Hit it under the left eye.

Pa had a split deer season back when I was a teen. I touched a live doe in buck season with the muzzle of my rem 700 2x... but never fired.

Ive shot a skunk at 12 yds with a 22-250 while coyote hunting

Ive shot a coyote at 20 yards with a 223 & night vision while coyote hunting

Pretty cool post, op.

Centerfire rifle: I hope that Foxes count as game…..I'm sure they are somewhere! 😉
* Fox @ about 5 feet……308 Win. I was deer hunting, standing on the ground in a drizzling rain……sensed something behind me! Just a Fox, but a little unnerving…..not aware of it's intensions.

*Fox - yep another fox….. this time about 15feet from a tree stand, directly below me. Same .308 Win.

* Deer - forgot about the deer☹️. Same rifle- about 20 feet from my tree stand, winded me and looked up. I was sitting, he was on my right and I had to shoot him from my left shoulder…..only game animal that I've ever shot from my "weak" side!

Shot a whitetail buck while running a doe within 10 feet of my stand. The bullet a 30/06 150 grain went down between his shoulder blades and took out the lungs and heart. He still ran about 25 feet but he was dead in mid air. I never had time to aim, just waved the barrel his way.

Wild hog at 3y with a 270 Win. Not a big one, but still way closer than I've ever wanted to be to a live one.

Hopped out of the truck to scan the field at night and the whole sounder was right on the side of the road in the tall grass.
You were in the middle of them!

About 12 feet straight down on 2 different occasions. First was with a 12 gauge and slugs. Second was with a 7RM. For the 7RM I was sitting in a ladder overlooking a big corn field. I figured they would filter into the field and I would end up having a 300-500 yard shot. Thing is, that night they decided to enter the field right past my tree. A 150 grain Winchester Ballistic Silvertip did a number on that 6-point. As I was skinning him, when I got to the shoulders, he pretty much fell apart. About 4 inches of his spine was missing as was a good chunk of his brisket bone and every rib along the bullet path had multiple fractures.

You just described my little buck that I shot! I can't recall the bullet…..but traveled right along the spine until about the last rib! memtb

A few years ago.
Had a buck run down a hill, through the bottom and slam on the brakes 30 feet to my left.
Swung the rifle around for a perfect broad side shot with the 250 Savage. (100gr Ballistic Tip)
I didn't see the branch/sapling between us.

Buck touched his nose with his butt, and took off running.
We walked/tracked for quite a while till we totally had no clue.
I was bummed, thinking I had a good shot and couldn't locate him.

Next morning I was hunting about 60 miles away and get a call from my friend.
His mom found the buck dead literally at the bottom of the ladder to her stand.

Ended up hitting the deer high and back. Entry wound looked like the bullet went in sideways.
I was just glad that it was found.
I told my friends mom she found it, and field dressd it.
It was hers.
