I was going to title this one, "What is the best short action, precision cartridge for a build", but...then figured it would go on to at least until Christmas and 500 replies. . And...with that "BEST" added it would probably start a few keyboard, strong discussions between the opinionated members here before it was done. I am thinking either a 6mm BRA, or a 6.5 Grendel, but I am not certain about the Grendel?? The latest that I have been told is the 6mm Creedmor is something people are starting to sway towards, however....by Creedmor is a tough one to swallow!! This probably is going to be a "one-piece-at-a-time build due to the cost involved; budget around $3000 or maybe a little less without the glass. I want to do something with a heavy barrel, short action rifle, something that would be a pleasure to shoot for a day at the range. The furthest range that we have is 300 yards so that is a consideration when asking for member's opinion.

With 300 as your max range, I'd do a 223 and run a .090 to .110 freebore but that's me.

In your listed chamberings, I'd go with the 6bra (or straight 6br, even more likely). The Grendel is cool but it's gonna be easier to get the 6br case to feed and eject than the Grendel. Add in that the br is a standard 473 bolt.face and you will both find it easier to score an action as well as easier to sell that action later, should you choose to.

You will want a controlled round feed/mechanical eject action for either case you pick. Plunger guns don't like really short cases much. You can buy ready to go 6br mags from multiple sources these days. I used the PVA br/Dasher kits in aics mags back when i.started on that road.

Do a search for precisionrifleblog for "what the pros use" in PRS. That will provide some guidance on what is working, and what components a lot of the best shooters are using to build their precision rifles.

I'm loving my 22 CM. Ive only been able to shoot out to 650. It's so dang accurate it's almost boring. I'm putting together a 6GT right now for a customer that shoots PRS. That seems to be a real popular round.

That's why I never ask what rifle to build or buy.

I am not one of those people who believe that one rifle fits all; rather, I am purpose-driven. I am not trying to convince anyone to do the same, but to me, this is a separate purpose, and what rimfires are for. I have done this with .22 LRs, al always have them with me when I am at the range. It is a pleasure to shoot all day, and the burden cost for a brick or two, or more, is worth it. I recently invested in .17 HMR. I got a suppressor for it this week and will be taking it to have it threaded on Friday.

I've never shot a 6br but would probably choose that of your choices above. But for comfortable all day shooting and max range of 300 yards, I'd go 223 as mentioned above or a 223 based case like 6x45 or 6TCU if you're wanting 6mm. I have a 6cm and love it but I wouldn't choose it for 300 max range and shooting all day at targets, that can be done with a lot less powder and a lot longer barrel life.

For my recent fun gun, I chose to chamber a Lyla 4 groove with a PTG /WRH Dasher reamer with a .272 no turn neck&104 freebore with Alpha Dasher brass It shoots 32.5 gr of Varget under a 105 gr VLD at 2940 fps with excellent accuracy from 100 - 1000 yards using a Tikka platform and factory mags, the cases feed and eject pretty darn well.
