What is the purpose of carrying a knife

I've carried some form of pocket knife since I was six or seven. We learned how to skin and butcher deer early. Then we found out why. That enabled the older guys to sit around the fire while we cleaned all the deer. You're supposed to respect your elders and we certainly did. We don't pack in, skin, or butcher in the field here. We might field dress one to lighten the load if necessary but all you need is a pocketknife for that. What we shoot goes to the skinning shed then the walk-in cooler quickly. For legs when skinning or braking a deer down my Milwaukee Sawzall does a good job along with any of many knives I have.

I carried a small Buck pocketknife in school from 6th grade on. The principle asked me one day if I had a knife, I said yes. He said good, I need to borrow it for a minute. That continued until I graduated. I always wondered why he just didn't carry a knife himself. But I didn't mind him borrowing mine.
Does your principal have any children/grandchildren? Would love to recruit them for our county school system.

Now a days it's a suspendable offense to carry a pocket knife.

Prior to my active duty in the Navy, I always had a pocket knife. Living on a farm you needed it almost on a daily basis. The first thing I bought from the ship store was a Buck 4" folding knife in 1969. Still have that knife. Also bought a Queen Steel 4" folding that I used when I got home. It is somewhere in the cattle coral when I lost it bulldogging calves or something, never did find it. I carried that buck for many years until the blade started getting a little thin when I retired it and replaced it with an identical Buck folding knife somewhere around 2000. My wife and boys gave it to me for Christmas. Carry it every day on my belt.

I am not sure. But he was a good, fair, man that could swing a paddle with authority if he had to. If he saw you in the hall he would tell you, tuck that shirttail in, and or, get a haircut before tomorrow or don't come back till you do. He meant it. Some of us he trusted with a knife. He never drove over 55mph..
You can't even mention the word gun now. My son said something about having a 1911. I gave it to him when he was 12, and an Ak 47 when he was 14. Anyway, he was suspended for saying he had a 1911, at home. I have a temper and can hurt someone if I get mad enough. I just about came unglued in the meeting with the school staff. They certainly knew where I stood after that.

Knives are civilized tools. They help us from looking silly trying to rip, tear, gnaw through something. A friend was a custom knife maker - full sized - beautiful works of art - but too $$$, too big, too heavy for me in the field. Had him make a knife for me 3 1/2" blade (7" OAL) - it has been on every hunt. Over the last 10 years (carried in my pack) I use a replaceable blade folder to bone out game - sharper than I can hone. I find I use the plyers on a multi-tool more than blades. But I still carry the small, fixed blade. A smallish, fixed blade to the hunter is like a badge or license - I just kind of have to wear one hunting or when outdoors.

Last time I had to use my Swiss Army knife in an emergency at the parking lot hospital. As I was walking to my truck I heard this woman screaming and yelling frantically . She had accidentally locked the keys in her car while putting her 8 month old baby in the car seat. Was a very hot day as it usually is in Texas. Temps that day were in the triple digits and even hotter in the car. By the time I got to her the baby was crying than stopped. Luckily I had my SAK and used the awl to break the passenger window. It was a miracle that I happened to stay late and walked out when I did. Baby was immediately taken to the ER and the staff revived her. One just never knows.
A little known fact I've read is the front windows are stronger than the back windows. Doesn't seem logical or economical for the manufacturer to do that, so probably a wives tale. Good on you not to be afraid to break a window. Probably 99% of people would be afraid to break the window, would dial 911, and the baby would have died.

In 1977 I was given a Camillus (sp?) Navy Electrician's Knife by a friend's grandfather. I've carried one ever since. I have worn out two of them and this third one is getting close to the blade tip coming up out of the bolsters from sharpening it. Can file the stop a couple times before that is counterproductive. When I heard that they were going to stop being made I bought two new ones. I've one to go. At my age that ought to see me to EOL.

Farm and ranching purposes for cutting twine, rope, hose, wire or myself loose if needed. Opening mail, use as a screwdriver or perforate what's needed. Cut off seat belt or the neighbor's throats if needed. I'm ready for the threats they gave cause the cops won't do ****! I really wish I had a gun the day they hit me with a vehicle while Iwas standing in my driveway. Cops didn't do ****! No more waiting or ever calling them again!
So, I can conclude you are not on good terms with your neighbors? LOL

I'm planning a small utility knife instead of a trademark hunting knife that I see many of you carry when out hunting. Just want to go light and my philosophy is to carry as less of a load specially around the waist as possible. Already feeling the weight of my 12 pound double on long walks. Am I missing something, please educate me..
Huntingwaves: your gonna find out when you need it and why? Sometimes its best to learn the hard way! you will never forget the next time??

Here it is, should have cleaned it up! Dad was a boiler technician, Master Chief Petty Officer E-9.
I've got one of those on my electrician's holster which also carries, 3 screwdrivers, 2 wire cutters, 2 wire strippers, black electrical tape, a circuit tester, and probably something I forgot. It's great when you're up on a ladder working on things. I'm not an electrician by trade.

When hunting, I carry a Benchmade Bugout in my pocket at all times. When I'm not hunting I carry a Benchmade Bugout in my pocket at all times. I don't think you need a big fixed blade in a sheath on your belt when you're hunting for any reason. I also carry a Havalon and maybe some other sort of fixed blade in my pack with a small saw. I've found that I can pretty much do all the work I need with a Havalon. I have my options of a Benchmade Altitude or Steep Country to carry as well as others, those are just the two that get thrown in if I want a fixed blade. When I was in the army I carried a Gerber multi-tool, larger Gerber or Benchmade fixed blade knife, and a pocket knife on my kit. You never know when you're going to need to make a cut, dig something out of your skin, clean or cut your finger nails…whatever the case may be, the reasons to carry a knife are endless.

As we're on a hunting forum discussing knives, and you mentioned all of the essentials you carry in your electrician's holster……you mentioned "Electrical Tape"!

I have and will always advocate that a roll of quality electrical tape be in everyone's hunting gear! It can have a multitude of uses when in the field…..it's uses pretty much limited by your imagination ! Even "if" you only truly need it once……you have it when you "need" it! JMO memtb

I used to have some wrapped around my trekking poles. I think I must've used it for something, or it's still there.

I also have more than one knife. My EDC is a mini-Leatherman on my key chain. Also while hunting on foot, I always carry a full size Leatherman with its pliers, screwdrivers, file, leather punch, blade, etc. - you never know when you'll need an emergency gun repair, tree stand repair, etc. In my vehicle or backpack while camping, I carry a tree saw and I made this 2 knife and sharpening steel sheath. The large knife is my boy scout knife, the thin knife and steel is what I used working for Armours & Co to put myself through college. I made the steel out of a rattail file and deer antler. You condition the sharpening steel with emory cloth. Sometimes I also carry this Remington 2 blade folder (blade & combo hide hook bone saw) w/sharpening steel if I'm walking a long ways from my truck in the mountains.
