What is the purpose of carrying a knife

I carry a knife everyday, sometimes more than one for different reasons. When I am hunting, I carry two in my bag. I have a Benchmade fixed blade infidel upside down on my pack strap in case I ever need it. It is one tool when, if you need it, you need it and there aren't many other substitutes. I probably over pack my bag which weighs in at 42 pounds but you know what? If I had to spend a few days in the bush if I was hurt or lost or sick, I would be confident and comfortable doing it. Between my emergency kit, first aid kit and survival items, a good knife is a must have when you venture out. I have a Leatherman Wave in each of my quads, one in my snowmobile and pickup, one in my backpack and usually carry one on my belt. Be prepared.

As many people being killed by knifes anymore. It's a possible that we may have to get serial No's placed on our knifes. Plus get them register. 🤣 England has been working on that. Trying to figure out how to get the serial number to tranfer to the person that got knifed.🤣🙃

I feel the same about my daypack……but, it's a bit lighter than yours. Probably about 10 to 12 pounds lighter. memtb

I'm planning a small utility knife instead of a trademark hunting knife that I see many of you carry when out hunting. Just want to go light and my philosophy is to carry as less of a load specially around the waist as possible. Already feeling the weight of my 12 pound double on long walks. Am I missing something, please educate me..

I carry a 4" folding on my belt……but, have a large Buck Sheath knife and a Swiss Army knife in my day pack!

Oh, I failed to answer the purpose part of the question. Answer: to cut things! 😉

Your 12 pound rifle should consider going on a diet! Entirely too much weight for long walks…….unless the terrain is very mild! memtb
I have a Havelon and a Leatherman multi tool zip tied to the outside of my pack, sometimes I will carry a Randall model 26 Pathfinder on my belt and always Benchmade folder in my pocket. Lately I have been leaving the Randall home because it can be noisy in a ground blind clunking on a chair. The Benchmade seems to meet all my needs for a knife, the only thing that is outside of my pocket is the clip.

Here's a photo showing my "well worn", very quiet tool carry belt……everything else, excluding binos, rifle, and shooting sticks are in my daypack! memtb

Last time I had to use my Swiss Army knife in an emergency at the parking lot hospital. As I was walking to my truck I heard this woman screaming and yelling frantically . She had accidentally locked the keys in her car while putting her 8 month old baby in the car seat. Was a very hot day as it usually is in Texas. Temps that day were in the triple digits and even hotter in the car. By the time I got to her the baby was crying than stopped. Luckily I had my SAK and used the awl to break the passenger window. It was a miracle that I happened to stay late and walked out when I did. Baby was immediately taken to the ER and the staff revived her. One just never knows.

Thought I'd share a little more purpose…..

Top- my grandfathers farm knife - handed it too me plenty time when feeding cows in winter and stuffing hay in the hammermill when grinding feed.

Next - my dads hunting knife - I think he used it more for cleaning fish.

Next - dad got this late in life to skin. Never got to use it.

Bottom - when I was 8, dad and my uncle Bruce took me into gun shop. I liked this knife because it said scout on the handle. It was a used knife. Dad said we couldn't afford it.
2 months later he handed it to me for my birthday.

Most of the good ones I can't show. I've given those to my two boys.

The purpose of carrying these every now and then is to honor your father

My hunting knife has been Outdoor Edge folding with gut hook. I have field dressed 2 elk, 1 Mulley, and 3 whitetail with one blade (carry small hand sharpener in pack). I also have mid size Buck on Pack. On farm I carry small folding with clip.

My dad and grandad both carried knives. Both sharp as a razor!
We weren't allowed to carry a knife in school. I carried one until I graduated.
Been carrying one everyday since. I'm 75.
I have two custom fixed blade.

Below is my EDC.

As long as it's sharp, it doesn't matter if it doesn't have a bone handle.
Easy to sharpen too!
