What is the purpose of carrying a knife

If you'd ever had to clean out a nice folding knife after using it to field dress a deer or larger game animal, you would know that it is much easier to clean a fixed-blade knife. A fixed blade does not have to be heavy. All you need is a 4" +/- blade with gripable but not too rough handle scales carried in a Kydex sheath on your belt or in your pack. Try it, you may like it.

front sight of a old Savage 99 but not up to the job for a grriz or buf or a moose but in a tight spot will still work do not ask me how I know about the savage sight working a old case muskrat would work good
 
Seriously, just no excuse not to have a fixed blade knife in your kit. I guess if you ride an ATV to your tree stand and thats it, ok I get it, white tail are pretty small. Going deep into hard country find another way to save a couple ounces.
20 some years on county search and rescue. #1 tool that failed for the victim, headlamp, flashlight if they even had one. Followed closely by pocket knife.

When there are other places to clip them. Last year I started carrying one in my sock as soon as I put it on. I cannot feel that it is there.

Tempted to say- Sometimes... when I don't feel like using my teeth, I'll use a knife to cut things.
Instead-
I always have a simple one blade folder in my pocket. It locks open and I can open it with one hand.

Not exactly EDC but it is the largest knife I own. It clashes with my work attire 👀 :p

This little guy hangs around my neck. I'm a little phobic about getting stuck in a car or light plane seatbelt post crash (don't have any experience with that and I'm good with keeping it that way). It's easy to get to and I think it'll cut through a seatbelt without any trouble. I've never had to test it.

I have tried carrying a folder in my sock, a number of years back. Knife was light and easy to carry, did not know it was there, and........then it wasn't and I didn't know it was gone until I needed it.
 
Being a farm and ranch boy, I was given a Buck 110 when I was 12 yo. It's my EDC then and still is today, and if I"m wearing pants, it's on my belt. I've worked through several over the decades, sent back to Buck for new scales, blades, locks. I "use" a knife. It's field dressed almost every type game, and processed livestock meat, cleaned no telling how many fish, dove and quail. It has dissected the most beautiful bone-in ribeyes as easily as stripping wires, scraping rust or splitting kindling. I've got a box full of other types of folders, but my 110 is always first.
And yes, I have a box full fixed blade hunters. I have fun and carry one of my custom builds with a 6"+ blade, but end up using my 110 for close work.
