Proper tap for Savage 110 action screw

I need to clean up the threads on a Savage 110. I know the threads are 1/4 x 28. Tap I'm looking at is 1/4 x 28 NF plug tap. Is this correct? I also see 1/4 x 28t, 1/4 x 28b, etc. Action screw wants to go in crooked, looks like the very first thread may be dinged. Thanks.

Got a 1/4 x 28 nf taper tap and run it through. Everything seems good. I got the barrel installed and headspaced but the original front action screw was too short for the new stock so won't get to test if the new threads will hold up to torque specs until I get a new screw in.

1/4-28 is correct. Plug taps are tapered, marked as NPT (National Pipe Taper.)
Did you use a roughing tap or a finish tap? There is a difference.
You need a straight finishing tap to do it correctly. Marked as NF, not NC.

Get a 1/4-28 NF (national fine) tap, NC is course thread (1/4-20)
You can specify:
a taper tap, 9 thread lead
a plug tap, 5 thread lead
a bottom tap, 2 thread lead
a plug tap is not a pipe tap, Pipe taps are NPT and a completely different animal

The hole is already threaded, you can use any of the 3 lead taps noted above to clean the threads. All 3 will cut the same thread pitch as long as you specify the same thread class; 2B will be off the shelf.
