She should have no trouble with expansion out to at least 600 or 700 yards, depending on the density altitude where you're hunting, if she's shooting the 225 TTSX. While my expansion testing as of right now is limited to a range of 500 yards because of how my target range is set up, I will point out that I'm only at 240ft above sea level with all these results I'm posting. If you calculate the same numbers but adjust your altitude to 7,000ft for elk country hunting, you gain an extra 100-125 yards easily for the same velocities. So what I'm getting here at near sea level for 500 yard velocity, for instance, I'm getting exactly the same 2,065 fps at 610 yards for 7,000ft altitude it tells me in my ballistic calculator. I think I'd feel totally safe with the TTSX down to an impact velocity of 1,900 without worry at all. And for the LRX I'd have no doubts in my mind down to 1,800 fps. So for my 338 WM at 7,000ft elevation with muzzle velocity of around 2,880 fps and temperature of 40*, I'd feel totally confident out to at least 725 yards before it would be at 1,950 fps. Her 225's should do fantastic out to at least her 500 yard shots you mentioned. I'm gonna post my results from hunting this year on here with both the LRX's and TTSX's as they happen on deer and elk this hunting season.
Great to hear that the 6.5's and .257's are performing well also MagnumManiac! I've tested down to .277 with the 129gr LRX and like the larger cals, expansion and penetration has been excellent. If you recover any 7mm, .264's, or .257 bullets this year post your results, we'd all love to see them! I'll be posting mine on this thread if I recover any from game this fall.
I use 145 LRX in my 280 AI and muzzle velocity is over 3100 with a 24 in barrel. I have taken 3 elk with it and the exit has always been a cloverleaf - all petals intact so far.
What twist rates are you using?
They tend to like to be seated deeper than most lead core bullets so they can jump further in all the calibers I've loaded for anyways.
I loaded some 150 TTSX for my friends 7 RM with a muzzle velocity of 3050 and he took his buck at 40 yds. 3 of the petals were found in the offside hide. The other stayed with the shank and thru the hide into the hillside. The petals acted like a hammer bullet in this case. I took a cow with my 280 AI at about 375 yds with a Hammer and the offside hide had 5 exit holes (center shank and 4 surrounding) in an almost perfect pattern 6 inches across.I've had great luck with the 270 gr.TSX's and the little 250 gr. TTSX's…..but, am concerned with petal loss with a high velocity impact with the LRX, which is designed to open at lower velocities than the other 2 I've used!
Impact @ very near 3K (3020 mv) does concern me a bit! Maybe if I'd go out and shoot something (at close range) it will dispel my fears!
