Ramblings and Such From Hunting Coyote

dwcars, I just did a quick internet search for both 6mm ARC rifles and ammo.
Midway USA has Howa 1500 rifles in stock, Hinterland Outfitters has quite a selection of rifles ranging from just over $400.00 for a Savage Axis II, to a Savage 110 Tactical for just over $700.00 all the way up to Christenson Arms bolt guns as well as several big name AR-15 manufacturers with a variety of barrel lengths and configurations.
Ammoseek.com shows quite a few sources for ammo, delivered right to your door at decent prices.
It is an intriguing cartridge with a lot of applications.
I don't see it disappearing anytime soon, particularly since the .22ARC is starting to really gain traction.
I'd probably dive in if I wasn't already heavily invested in the .243Win in bolt guns and the AR-10.

I just had shoulder surger last week and was going to my pre- operation in central Mt . Driving up the road I passed a military convoy stopped on the side of the road, just past them I saw a coyote loping across the field I took a 65 mph hard right out down the dirt road and watched him cross in front of me 75 yards away. I hit the binders and bailed out by then he was Mach 2 but couldn't outrun my .223 wylde gas gun . Bout that time I turned around and realized I was 1/4 mile ish from th convoy, oops!! I was shooting in a safe direction but I'm sure they were a bit edgy

I use a lot of Bear Creek uppers of all calibers and have never had a problem with them, excellent accuracy I tend to like the side chargers on 80% lowers and catch them on sale you can get .223 wylde with bcg side chargers for 200ish$

I am a fan of the side charging AR's. The charging handle moving each time it shoots hasn't caused me any problems as of this time. They do still make some that it doesn't, but the price is higher for them. I made a few uppers into side charging ones for my use as well. I ran into a guy while back that told me he wouldn't buy any firearms from a dealer just at garage sales and such and that he wouldn't buy any ammo in bulk either. Kind of a strange fellow I probably wouldn't want to hang out much with him, a little bit on the radical side for me.
 
Probably 30 or 35 years ago now I went up on the mountain hunting coyotes in early May. I stopped in at the main ranch and the rancher was telling me he was out riding with his dog, and they had moved a small heard of cows and calves to a new pasture. As they were on their way home, he rode past a huge rock in the middle of his pasture and a coyote ran out attacking his dog and ran under his horse causing a rodeo. He was telling me that had never happened to him before, and he thought the coyote was sick, maybe even rabid would I go kill it, and take it in for testing. I told him I go look but that I figured he probably was right at a den of pups, and it was protecting its pups from an intruder. I came in from the back side slipped in close to where he said it had happened sat up and started glassing. Laying in the shade of a large boulder was a coyote, it didn't know what hit it and I started in with the injured coyote squalls another coyote popped up ran towards the sounds stopped and fell to the second shot. I then saw some pups running toward the rock pile, they had come out at the sound of the injured coyote sounds as well. Two adults and eight pups in less than two hours on sight, a good days work that kind of made up for the times it took me a couple of days hard walking and tracking, calling to get a den and sometimes one adult.

For some reason it works for me I use acetone and card cleaner with scotch brite and always have extra nozzles I think that's the key and i order the clean out nozzles then bake for 3 1/3 hrs at 195 eve plastic parts turn out and it seems to wear great but who knows could be a bad batch of paint or altitude above sea level hard to say
 
It was a cold snowy day in mid-November when I was up running my traps on the mountain starting at around 7500 feet and going up to nearly 9000 feet. The loop I made was close to thirty miles by the time I got back to the ranch house. I had a coyote in my first set she wasn't in it very long and had some good fight to her, so I shot her with my rifle at a distance, put her in the truck and got my dry dirt and remade the set. I had a cat in another set up in the rocky canyon before I came out on the open flats leading to the timber and creek crossing, I went on through the timber and was coming to some rocky grass pastures that had an old cabin in it. The windows and door were gone to time, but it still had a small potbellied stove in it. I passed by till I got to a low saddle that crossed to another pasture, parked and slipped into the pasture to a rock pile and made a stand so I could call down into a willow choked spring fed creek. I had just finished my first series of dying snowshoe hare when a pair of coyotes popped out of the willows and headed my way on a cow trail, when they got about 75 yards out, I dropped the lead coyote and did some injured coyote screams. The coyote that was behind jumped over its dead buddy and ran a few more yards then stopped it met the same fate as its partner. I went back to the ranch house to show off my days' work when I got there the ranchers son looked at them and then looked at me and said you just pi99 me off I work my a45 off and can't get that many in a month. We were and still are friends he just has a dry sense of humor kind of like mine lol.

We just love all your stories. You need to compile them and make a book on Coyote Hunting******
Keep them coming and seriously think of contacting a publisher. They will send writers to you and make your story into a book and movie!!!!
I was approached by a publisher about all my life's trails. I had to drop out a lot of my younger years working with the US Government and also my personal life. It would be a good one from all the counties leaving out the government, but a lot of the scuba expeditions with the Cousteau Society in the FIGI Islands and then International SKY DIVING all though AISA, Philippians, Tiawan, Thailand. Laos, Cambodia, China.
Did some shooting while Scuba and sky Diving,

Best days I have been in on is 6 coyotes, done that a couple times, most days are 1 to 3 dead. I backed grounded you so you know what we see here normally and what a good day is. Well about 5 to 6 years ago, two buddies I used to hunt with were out on a day at -20 and it had been cold for a couple weeks and they were doing sets every mile or less on the north side of lake Elwell......on any given set they would have 2 to 3 coyotes come in, and when they had one at 200 and one a 1/2 mile back, on the ice, they would shoot the close one and the back one would stop, they would keep calling and in it would come and they would take that one out also. normally our coyotes are sharper than that, but they were so dam hungry they still came. At the end of the day they killed 12 (super day here) so you can imagine how many they had come. Both are seasoned callers and good shots. They said the conditions were miserable, especially blowing the call and shooting as we all do both bare handed.............:eek: but they had an awesome day.

I have killed 36 in three days that was my best. I killed 6 in a hour once when I was keeping track.
