If he's stuck hand loading anyway. May be worth trying the hammer124 hunter.
They seem to not care about seating. Not sure with that much but I know weatherby's love them.
Might be the cheapest option.

I called him and explained the situation as best I could. I think he understands and said he would contact the manufacturer first to see what they'll do about it

At 3.9ish How is the bullet even in the neck? My 6.5-284 runs 3.2 with 147's. To push that case, which is much longer, I'd be out of the case.
It was'nt. The bullet would be completely free of the brass without any support before engaging the grooves. There's no way even with the heaviest longest bullets available to load anywhere close to the grooves.
The craziest part is previously he shot hornady american whitetail 129 gr factory loads. Said the group was slightly larger than a skoal can. He killed a doe with it last year. I'm amazed it shot a lighter even shorter bullet that well.

I've seen 204's run 2.50-300 thousands off the lands and shoot .25. I loaded for many and need to run .100 off the lands to have enough bullet in the neck. Any further and they fall out. They still shoot .25. The 2 I have run exact same spec fortunately.
I guess what throws me with this one is the fact that the bullet will leave the case and be completely unsupported before it engages the rifling. No clue what the results of that would be.

FWIW - my buddy shoots his Weatherby Mark V with the bullets seated a full .250" off the rifling and he shoots it well.
If you're an inch off the rifling with a properly loaded bullet then something is wrong.

Agreed 100% which is why I decided against loading for it and recommended he take it to a smith. He may have gotten extremely lucky firing it before, I just don't want ANYTHING bad happening with ammo that I rolled in the chamber.
It would certainly be off the lands. If the gunsmith clears it and says its ok to shoot and he still wants me to work him up a load I may try the Barnes.
