Recent grizzly attacks on Montana elk hunters

FYI: Talked to the rancher that runs cattle up the West Fork where the dude got munched and the 3 ranchers that run cattle up there have had too much calf loss over the past years and they are going to take a NON-USE this coming summer, watch out North and South of the West Fork and into the Centennials, the Griz need to find some new cows to eat!!

Guy I know was walking his dogs near his house,in a subdivision.Came around corner with his wife, and there was sow w/2 cubs.It was instant,he carries, she had spray.Think he missed three time, all bow range type, but bear turned,1/2 way ran in brush. He never hit her.Now hes gone to a 10mm,before he had 44 .I was like? Hows that going to help, he admits hes not a good shot. These G bear.

Seems the grizzly bears are attacking more frequently due to high population numbers

There have been 3 more maulings since this one all in the same area.
Be safe all of you western hunters out there and bring plenty of pistol with you when in grizzly country.

I am not totally sure, but I understand Fish and Game had closed that area off in 2019. When I am archery hunt I carry bear spray, and a 4" 500 Smith. Longer barrels just get in your way. That area held a lot of moose and elk a long time back. Over hunting allowing any sex elk to be hunted in the later part of the hunting season, and wolfs has about clean the area out.
I had hunted that area several years back before and just after the first grizzly was introduced their. The cowboys told us about being ran out of the timber in one area due to a grizzly there.
Fish and Game has totally screwed up the elk and moose hunting in Montana due to no-wolf-hunting for years. Presently I don't understand why moose hunting is still allowed in Montana. I am thinking of stop buying points every year, because almost no tags being let out. (I wonder why?) The wolfs need to be gone or kept on Yellow Stone National Park area.

There is a guy on the hunting channel that has killed a few cape buffalo with a 10mm using hard cast 210 grain bullets. One shot kills . The bullets have all gone through the buffs and most are under the skin on the far side. A hard cast 40 cal bullet doesnt have a penetation issue . The guides on the buff hunts all said the pistol round surprised them and said they have seen large caliber buff rifle loads that didnt drop a buff any quicker . I think the cape buffalo is close to, if not the most difficult animal to get good penetration on.
I dont live anywhere close to grizz country, so all my input is purely based on what ive read or seen on hunting shows. If i ever do go to grizz country , i will do so with a glock 10mm loaded with 15 hard cast handloads. A double mag pouch with 30 more rounds will be on my belt too . Controlled , deep penetrating loads avaliable in large quanities that can be put on target at high speed will always increase your odds on a fatal brain shot imho.
I have had a 10mm Glock 20 for about 20 years now. Very good cartridge but I don't think I would take bear hunting or use on other creatures. Big creatures and the 416 Weatherby etc would be my preferencd

In my head I will have My KA-BAR in my teeth, while spitting fire from the 44 magnum, head shooting the charging Grizzly that is after me and my wife......
In reality, I will probably scream like a women, while peeing myself from the fetal position, and my wife will shoot the Grizzly in the face. And never let me live it down.
But at least I have a plan.....

Id never hunt anything bigger than a whitetail with a HOT 10mm load, but the proof is out there that a hardcast lead heavy with a stout charge behind it will flat penetrate through some heavy bone and muscle out of a 10mm. When it comes to a charging bear, im not thinking in a hunting frame of mind. Im thinking combat. Theres a reason you dont see revolvers on the battle field anymore. Its because when the solid waste hits the fan, taking time to aim small flys right out the window. Id feel alot better if my last moments on earth were spent raining rounds in the vicinity of a bears face as fast as i could pull the trigger. I dont think i could get more than one off with a casull and i dont trust my aim that good when death is running at me at 35mph ! But thats just me. We all get to choose what pistol we want in our hands before we die at the teeth and claws of an angry bear , lol.

I live on land in a high density Grizzly area, we get them around the house, barn etc.
Grizzlies love chicken and grain, they don't bother the cows or horses but will claim deadstock instantly( it seems)
They sure can year into a chicken house or a Grain bin, seem to love dog food.
Politics closed the spring sesson on them, City folks 600 miles away who have never seen a wild Grizzly. A hunting season only makes sense.

so does SSS if absolutely needed.

Next year I'm going to spend a couple weeks in the montana backcountry. I dont think I'm taking a handgun since I'll have a rifle already. Bear spray will probably be on the hip belt though.

Yes, SSS is a factor, but around the farm they smell humans on everything and are ready to flee. I think hunters get into trouble cow talking in an elk patch, I have called them in like this- some come in like a freightrain( on the ambush) Grizzlies also come into rifleshots. A guy in a neighboring town shot one in his kitchen a couple of years ago, my immediate neighbor had another tear the metal off his stock trailer last year for a few morsels.

that would get your adrenaline pumping. What do you carry caliber wise for a sidearm?
