A bird in hand vs two in the bush

I promise, I am not trying to start a 6 page debate, but, I think there is an opportunity looking me in the face, and I thought I would pose the question for feedback. I have a custom 6.5x284 N. I've got it shooting 140 gr Berger Hunting VLDs to inside .25 going 3005 fps. That my 'bird in hand'. The 'two in the bush' is the prospect of bumping the bullet up.to the newer, sleeker 156 gr Extreme Outer Limits VLD. The rifle is built on a long action and feeds out of a BDL type internal magazine, so a longer COAL should not be an issue. Is there any reason that I shouldn't give this a go? The goal would be carry more energy down range to increase my effective ethical range on Elk Size animals. It would seem that both the BC and the extra weight would assist in that regard. The best response would be from someone that has used this bullet on game at distance with a starting velocity in the 2900 fps range, but would love to hear from anyone with any thoughts on it. Seems to me like opportunity is knocking!

You obviously reload, just buy a box of the 156's and work up a load. Either they will shoot or they won't. Time and a few bucks is all that you will be out. Unless you are worrying about barrel life.
