Type of Throat

I'm wondering what type of throat I should cut into the 300 RUM I'm building, putting a Wyatt box on it? I was planning on having it throated for the 250gr ATips, but since they are not looking like they will be good hunting bullets I'm thinking the 225gr ELDMs, so should I have it throated for those or do something else? If I throat it for the ELDMs is this going to cause issues with other bullets?

I would make up a dummy round with the 225 and have it throated to that at or above the neck shoulder junction. If down the rode you wanna shoot the 250 you can always cut a little more out if necessary but you cant put it back.
That being said I'm a Berger 215 fan.

My recommendation is to do a SAMMI chamber and load accordingly. If you throat for a specific bullet and it doesn't like it you may not find another one that it likes.

300 RUM's are designed for different bullets and needed free bore so I would keep it simple.

Thanks guys. Can you cut a throat out to much for a bullet and than not be able to chase the lands for the life of barrel?

Sure you can, that's why with a throater you gotta go slow.

I never chase the lands anymore, adjust powder charge to stay in the node when the throat erodes, then setback and re-chamber 3 times at .100" intervals. After that shoot until accuracy goes away and barrel is done.

I say throat away for at least 3 bullets and average them out.
For instance, in my 300WM barrels, I throat for .220", this covers Nosler 210gr RDF/ABLR, Berger 210gr/215gr/230gr, Nosler 200gr or most other high BC comp style bullet.

And yes, you can throat too long, but there are bullets that like jump just as much as there are bullets that don't, in my experience.

Set up properly and you can have the best of both worlds. Every barrel, gun and bullet is different, best advice be able to adjust to what that gun or barrel or bullet likes.

It's a carbon barrel, so I have to chase the lands. Thanks for the reply's, gave me a good starting point of what to do.

There is a video form I think gunwerks or one of the companys that has used the A-tips on a antelope. It put it down with ease and had a rather large hole in the other side. something like 600 plus yards. So it looks like they will work.

I seen that. I may change my mind if I get to see some results with the 250s showing they will open up at slower velocities also.
