Hunting with 129 sst Remington 260

So I had my first semi custom gun built its on a 700 action (blue printed) 24"lilja barrel Timny trigger
B&C stock started doing some loading for it and my load ended up being 49.1 gr of RL 22 @ 2954 fps
So hunting season comes along and I'm lucky enough to take a deer with my 260 @210 yds (bang flop) everything was great recovered the 129 sst perfect mushroom I'm thinking everything is great so the next deer season come around I shoot another deer at 138 yds behind the front shoulder once again ( bang flop) so I'm thinking if I find another bullet it will be another perfect mushroom well not so much I got some bullet fragments and core separation so I'm wondering if I need to change bullets
Or am I just overthinking this ....thanks for your time and opinion

Other bullets I've tried are Accubonds, swift sorrocos, but none of them were as accurate as the 129 sst

If it works, don't mess with it. A dead deer is dead no matter the bullet.

I use 130gr SST's in my 270 & have retrieved a mushroomed projectile in one deer & splintered pieces in another.
As others have said, they are not bonded so will shrapnel particularly when contacting bone.
Both animals were deceased with one shot, so they work & they are accurate!

As usual its about shot placement, put it in the right place & the animal doesn't know its an SST.

If your aim to collect mushrooms then yeh use a bonded projectile but even then there is no guarantee OR scan the fields after rain

Here in the South, we get a lot of close shots. 123 SST with a MV of 2900 does not often shoot through a deer at 40-60 yards, neither did the Berger 130g Hunting. 129g Hornady sp works in spades on close, high velocity impacts, so does the 130g accubond, and 127g Barnes long range. We shoot long barrel 6.5x47, 6.5 Creed, 260, 6.5x55, and 6.5/06. We hunt on shooting lanes cut through a jungle, deer and hogs. If animals run off, they can be lost, so we like a blood trail if they don't collapse on the spot. For us, a deer bullet has to be a hog bullet also, hogs are a good bullet testing medium. 140g SST has proven to be a great bullet, near and far on hogs and deer out of the 6.5's mentioned above.

LVJ76, you can rely on the 154g sst in the 7 Mag with a MV of 3200(R#25 with WLRM primer) to take all deer near and far. Friends went to Africa and killed 6 plains game each including Eland and Kudu with the 162g SST with a MV of 3150 out of Weatherby 7 STW's...all instant kills...no runners.

Lucky you found me. LoL!!! I have hunted with my 260Rem sense 1997. I have a 27" Krieger Barrel and shoot 140 grain Berger bullets. Best advice is 300 yards or less shoot in the neck. Over 300 yards shoot Hight shoulder or lung. I've taken deer close as 62 yards and just shy of 1,000.

The sst is a fine hunting bullet, I've personally never looked for my bullets inside game, only thing that mattered was a humane harvest at whatever I shot. Don't over think it because of what you read online. Ballistic tips, game kings, power points and my favorite core loks are great bullets that will serve you well on game up through the biggest elk. Shot placement! Good luck this year

The only thing I have ever used SST bullets for is punching paper. They are too thin in the jackets for me and I want consistent performance with my bullets and a bullet that will hold together.

If I scrimp on a reload, it sure as hell ain't with the bullet.

Just cause a bullet will deliver one hole groups doesn't mean it is a game bullet.

I load 150 gr SSTs for my daughters 30-06. MV is 2724 and is loaded down to reduce recoil. The load is fantastic with a consistent 1/2" group. She shot her small mule deer buck last fall at 40 yards right behind the shoulder and it looked like a gernade went off. The entry hole was 3" and a blood trail a foot wide. He made it 30 feet. We found just the copper jacket under the hide on the opposite side. The damage that bullet caused was tremendous. My question is; how will it do on elk with a thicker hide? Will it fail to penetrate deep enough?

The 150gr is too thin for Elk and may fail to penetrate on a close shot, but the 180gr SST will do the job and then some.

The 165gr might work but not the 180gr, this would work best.

Apologies, meant the 165gr might work but not like the 180gr, the 180gr will go through bone and get to the vitals.

Use the 150 InterBond instead of the SST. The InterBond bullets hold together better for close ranges.

I go with the more accurate load.
Id rather know it will end up exactly where I aim, avoiding bone if possible!

As I mentioned they will still end up on the slab, I shot a 300kg male Sambar with a 130gr SST from my 270.

It moved from POI 25 meters before collapsing.

Heart shot, after opening it up to obtain the fillets basically there was no heart muscle left, also no meat damage either!

I don't have an issue using the SST, as I mentioned previously shot placement is key, plus they are usually around 1/2 the price of bonded projectiles

Got ya. Nothing wrong with that.
