Hello the internet.

This year I have a California black bear tag, so I'm getting ready for a sort of backcountry hunt with my 13 year old brother. We'll be hunting in the Trinity Alps Wilderness in an area a friend has seen a lot of good bears this year while deer hunting. Our base camp will be approximately 6 miles from the trail head, and we will be hunting around 8000 feet of elevation.

The rifle I will be using is my brand new Winchester M70 Featherweight in .280 Remington, topped with a Vortex Diamondback 4-12x44 BDC scope. I haven't had a chance to zero it in yet due to fire danger (the first time I was going to try the rifle range was on fire, and the second time it was a dozer crew camp. Now it's just closed until we get good rain.), but I have a box of Remington 140gr Core-Lokts (Advertised at 3050fps) and I have a box of Barnes 140gr Barnes Vor-TX TTSX at 2985 waiting for me at Sportsman's Warehouse. We'll see which groups better. I haven't gotten my loading press set up yet, so I'm stuck with factory right now.

More about the area we'll be in. Our base camp will be in a meadow that coincidentally marks the point where three prominent peaks in the area meet at 6900ft. We'll be climbing the razorback ridges between peaks and glassing from there for shots of about 500 yards, give or take. The treeline stops at around 7200, where it's replaced by Manzanita that has berries until November and grass that is a food source until the snow gets above 2 feet deep.

The plan right now is to start on Oct. 23 and go through the 27 or 28. We were going to do it this week so a friend of ours could tag along as a pack mule before he started a new job, but I got sick last week so we pushed it back. I plan to make a video out of it for YouTube, so I will probably post a link at the end.

I don't really have a point to this post, so I guess I'm open to any sort of commentary, advice-giving, tips, tricks, breakfast recipes, campfire stories or sarcastic quipping.

Good luck, doesn't sound like you've had much.

It's been 40+ years since I hiked into the Trinity Alps, lots of people-mostly dope smoking, unwashed types, anti-hunting/shooting types seeing how high they could get high. I can't remember that trail name.

Mostly the same type in the area. Though now we have the growers in droves as well, but I digress. I don't know how familiar you are with the area, but our base is going to be at Red Mountain Meadows. It's been 9 years since I've been up there, and my brother has never been, so it should be fun.

I typically carry a Beretta 9mm when I'm out. This trip, to save weight I'll be taking a S&W Shield 9mm. I'd actually prefer to take a 22 revolver to hunt small game, but money doesn't grow on trees and I haven't gotten to that one yet.

I'm sure you already thought of this, but in case you didn't... Keep one eye out for bears and the other on your 13 year old brother. Give him clear instructions ahead of time on how to react if the encounter with a bear (or other predator) is sudden and not favorable.

Good luck. And update us when y'all return.

Well, bear hunt is postponed again. I'm still sick. And I was trying to zero my rifle yesterday, but I forgot my rest, so I used an empty backpack rolled up under the fore end, but there's not much consistency that way. I have it close enough that I'm comfortable shooting deer/bear to 150 yards, though.
