6.506 vs 280 AI using 140 gr bullets

I am in the same boat as you. I wanted a rifle to be used for long range varmint hunting and also big enough for elk. After all of the comparison I decided to go with the 7 WSM. It will do everything that the 280 AI will do (and maybe a little more) and the brass/dies are cheaper and don't...

    another wind doping question

The way that I read the articles from the site that was listed above, all I will need to do is print a chart with the different ranges for verticle ballistics and also print the same chart for a 1 MPH wind. Once I figure the wind angle and if it is a half value or full value, simply multiply...

    another wind doping question

I think that I am going to use a chart for now. I have several items on my wish list before an iphone or pda (chronograph, rangefinder, etc...). Is the program that you are talking about on the website that backwoods hunter listed?

    another wind doping question

Thanks for the post! I had to read it pretty quickly but it looks great.

    another wind doping question

I have read the articles from this site and many others on wind doping and I think that I am getting a very basic understanding. Is there a site that has a chart that will list the wind angles and the value that is given to the it (full value, half value, etc...). I believe this is...

    Tryin this again

The Burris XTR 6-24 gets my vote. I paid $600 on ebay brand spanking new for mine. Some of these scopes come with 1 MOA adjustments on the vertical turret but it can be changed to 1/4 MOA for $40. I prefer this scope to the Leupolds, Nikons, and Bushnells and it is made here in the US if that...

    Adjusting turrets for wind

Where is the best place to get the "card or PDA" information that you are talking about? I am so new to this that I am not sure what PDA form is. I assume a hand held calculator of sorts that balistic information can be put into. I am willing/going to do the work at the range. I guess I...

22-250 vs. 223 for a long range beginner?

My suggestion is for the 22-250. I bought a 223 and used it for a couple of years and did not like it. I mainly shoot prairie dogs and it is just not flat shooting enough for me. The 223 would simply tip the prairie dogs over or give them a little toss at longer ranges where the 22-250 is...

    Adjusting turrets for wind

I have been doing some more research on this topic and I have a few more questions. Do you use some computer (like the 5.11 HRT watch) to input data to give you an idea of the turret adjustment? Wind angle seems to be the hardest thing to adjust for (this is from what I read anyways) Are...

    Action Selection

Shooting 7mm 180 grain VLD's at 3000-3100 is my goal. With that being said I was thinking 7 WSM. I think with a 28" barrel I should be able to get close.

    Action Selection

I am looking to build a solid deer/antelope/possibly elk gun in the near future. When the smoke clears, is there that much difference between the factory actions that a rifle can be built off of? I am not interested in a custom action at this point in my life. This question stems from a...

    Adjusting turrets for wind

Let me preface this question by saying that I am brand new to long range hunting/shooting. Figuring bullet drop seems fairly straight forward when I look at the various ballistic calculators but adjusting for wind has me puzzled. How is this done? It seems that there can be an unlimited...

    .280 Ackley Improved

The JRS does look awesome on paper. The only thing that makes this caliber a tough sell is that no barrel makers have the reamer so it is pretty expensive if you have to buy a blank and a reamer and then pay to have the work done.

    MOA question

That is an awesome video! I hope to have some shots like that in the future. After I get the 22-250 all outfitted and I get the "fun money" account built back up, I want to build a longrange hunting rifle. I can't decide on a caliber yet, but something to reach out and smack an antelope...

    MOA question

I totally agree with what you are saying. I am having the factory barrel (1 in 12 twist) reamed to Ackley Improved and I am going to use it until it is shot out. Then I am going to a little faster twist and either 28 or 29 inchs :). That should really make her scream! I might try the flat...
