    300 weatherby

I may sound boring, but I would either keep it a .300 Weatherby, or drop down to .257 Weatherby. The pair of Weatherby has proven themselves over the decades as great choices for almost any hunt. The other option I would consider is a .340 Weatherby, which has been called the perfect elk and...

    Short barreled 257 Wby

I have to agree with most others, in that you are talking about turning one of the flatest shooting rifles ever into a "lesser magnum" with 25-06 performance that burns an immense load of powder. Why do this when you could opt for a cartridge optimized for that length barrel that would be much...

    25-06 hammer load data

I've always seen the .25-06 as extremely under-rated. While not quite the .257 Weatherby, the .25-06 will really reach out and "touch" game. I think the only reason it isn't more popular is because they didn't attach the suffix "magnum" to it when the cartridge was released.

Your favorite Quarter Bore and why

I've the choice of MANY cartridges when I reach for a rifle, yet when hunting deer I reach for the .25-06 most often. It shoots any factory ammunition well (and that ammunition is available), is easy to reload for, shoots flat enough I can ignore bullet drop in all but the longest shots, and...

    Which .25?

Cartridge choices are almost unlimited, which makes picking ONE somewhat difficult. I live in NC, have a lot of weapons to choose from, and the rifle I reach for most often when a .22 won't do is a 25-06. The 25-06 will handle all the range you are apt to have in NC, and do so without leaving...

300 RUM, 190 gr LRX vs AK griz

The only reason I haven't headed to Alaska, is that I don't think I would come back.

    Help with cleaning barrel

I wouldn't accept a custom gun that isn't a shooter. "Pretty" is nice, but they must SHOOT!

    Wyoming Guided Elk Hunt 2023

The most honest answer I ever got from an outfitter when I tried to pin him down for the odds of me collecting on a nice elk in the high mountains of Wyoming, Montana, or Idaho was that a hunter should expect shot opportunity on a 315+ bull once every three years. I've beat the odds and taken my...

300 Win Mag or 338 Win Mag

I agree with previous posts. If you are only looking to use this new gun in New Zealand, there is no justification for going above 30 caliber, and the modern 7MM and 6.5MM cartridges outperform the .300 Win on the game you have — although the ammunition cost is higher.

new barrel. have you ever seen this

From a metalurgical point of view, it looks like there was a flaw in the steel before the barrel was made. My first degree in manufacturing engineering tells me that is not uncommon. If that flaw was near the chamber I would question the safety of the barrel, as it APPEARS the steel is not...

Boot recommendations for someone with tendonitis ( Achilles)

Tendonitis is ironic inflammation that can be CURED. If not cured, it tends to get worse and can be debilitating. Usual treatment involved getting the swelling down with rest, ice, ibuprofen, & steroids (most often a Prednisone injection), followed by stretching and strengthening. Getting the...

270 Winchester, 6.5-06, or 25-06 Fast Twist Deer Rifle

You have identified 3 good options, but only one of them gets you far enough from what you already have to make it "interesting" — the .25-06. Your other choices largely overlap your .30 cal.

7mm-08 the forgotten 6.5 Creed Killer?

7mm-08 is the chambering I always wanted but never bought. It has less recoil, but more energy at 300 yards than the parent .308.

    Shot groupings

I have always been amazed that anyone thought bullets that were headed different directions at 100 yards would miraculously start curving towards the point of aim at longer distances. Anyone knowing physics knows this is absurd. "Aim small, miss small". When shooting at longer distances people...
