Optics?

I settled on the 6.5 Creedmoor(I had a previous post). Looking for advice on optics now for my encore.

I'm looking at the Burris 3-12x right now. It will be used for hunting 90% of the time, either whitetail or pigs. I don't see myself really using the 12x, but from what all I've read, and from previous experience, the eye relief and clarity diminishes with increase in scope power.

So I'm thinking the 3-12 will be good to about 8.

Only other experience I have with pistol scopes are simmons and some old fixed power tasco that were made in japan. Both are pretty decent scopes, I just wanted to go with something a little better for this project.

Budget is 450.

The burris scope that you mentioned is nice glass. You should also take a look at the Bushnell Elite 3200 2-6 power scope. Very clear glass with ample eye relief through out the power range. I have several of these scopes mounted on big bore and small bore silhouette pistols. We have shot out to 500m with these scopes on silhouettes with no problems. You could also hunt around for a used Leupold 2.5-8x LER VXIII with click turrets (Not Friction) scope. They are nicer yet. I think you could find one of those within your budget.

Is 6x really enough? Just seems so low. The simmons i have is 2-6x but its usually at 4x all the time and i used it under 100 yards.

You would be surprised what you can do at 6X. The shoot off targets we have at 200 yards are 1/2 scale chickens. -About as tall as a pop can, and about half that wide. Can hit them all day long at 6X. Shot a rock chuck at 388 yards with a 7x burris scope on one of my 6 BR's. The 3-12 Burris does give you more magnification should you need it, but light transmission and the field of view diminishes quickly as power increases. If you get a chance, take your 2-6X scope out and look at a target the size of a deer's vitals at 200 yards at 6X. I'm not bagging on the Burris, they are a great scope, but just sharing my experiences. If you can swing it, I would go with the 2.5-8X Leupy.

I used to use 3-12's all the time with the BP reticle.
I have competed and hunted @ 12 power as well.
I would order a target turret for the scope and then dial off the bottom plex for LR when needed.

What about the new Nikon Force? I have a nikon on my AR and it's pretty clear.

Never used the Nikon.


Overkill? Not for me. I wanted more, but I am weird that way.
I rarely use LER scopes anymore.

Great article. I went ahead and dropped a rifle scope I had laying around onto my 22k hornet. It's....interesting, lol. Had some questions.

If I wanted to do something like that with this pistol would it work out very well? Not sure how the creedmoor will recoil and it doesn't have a break.

I'm also concerned about the time it takes to get on target. I tried with my two frames. Simmons was on right away, but it was a very narrow for the field of view in terms of the sweet spot.

The rifle scope was quicker, but i could basically only see the center of the reticle. I had to move WAY in to where I could see any improvement. At the shooting position it'd take me a long while to find my target. I tired moving in for a full FOV and backed out slowly, but it seemed really slow.

Any advice?

I wouldn't try it without a good brake.
If you go that way, I can give you some smith's that can put one on a SP.
I find targets way faster with a riflescope than I do a LER scope.
Riflescopes have lot larger FOV compared to LER's.
Another key is the eye relief of said riflescope.

Below are two videos. One my son is using a 7mm SAUM with 162 A-Max's (cerakoted XP-100 center-grip)
Other one is me shooting a 6.5-06 with 140 grainers at around 2880 fps.
Both of these are using Holland's radial brake.
One has 6.5-20 Leupold and the other has a 4.5-14 Leupold.

That's unreal reduction in recoil. What does that muzzle break cost for installation and what is the turn around time? I'd think it'll be easier for me since I'd only have to send in a barrel.

I'm not sure if this is the right route for me, but I'm going to look into it.

Also, how do you go about making one of those pistols with a bolt? It looks like a 700 action but I'm no expert.

It is Remington's center-grip XP-100.
Single-Shot specialty pistol.
The rear grip is a non-designated 700 action.
Google-Holland's Shooting Supply.
It is his newest brake design.
There are number of competent smith's that can install it.

From what you stated in your other post about 100 to 200 yards and possible out to 300 yards for deer you would really love the Burris LER 3-12. You will just have to learn how to use it. I really like the Weaver 2.5-8x28 LER scopes. I always keep the scope set on 2.5 for the reason that a deer can pop up in your lap and I have learned that you always have time to crank the power up but never have time to crank it down. I will find the deer very quickly on 2.5 and then crank it up to 8 and pick my spot on the deers shoulder and shoot that spot. Most of my hunting with my Contenders are only out to around 125 yards. If I was shooting deer at longer ranges I would bite the bullet and drop the cash on a Burris 3-12. I have shot some with a friends pistol that has one and I really like it.

I don't want to have a ton of setup into this project so I think for this one I'm going to stay with a pistol scope. If that doesn't work out then I still have some time before deer season to get it sorted.

This can't be an action that is a rifle or was a rifle.
Sort of depends on whose barrel, trigger, scope, base and rings you use, and who you have build it.
Call me tomorrow some time and I can walk you through things.
