270 Win 140 gr bullet load ideas

I've been shooting 58 gr of H-4831sc and 140 Accubonds which is a max load in Nosler's book. Velocity is only 2840 out of a 22" barrel.

Is there a better powder for this bullet out of a short barrel? Any good powders to try with 150 Bergers and a short barrel?

Let's do some calculations:

How much velocity increase per inch of bbl beyond 22: Lets say 20 FPS, just guessing, but reasonable.

27" bbl, 58.5 RL-22 = 3190 FPS MV with the 140 NAB.

5" shorter barrel = 5 X 20 or 100 fps mv loss or 3090 FPS out of a 22" bbl.

Switch to RL-22, learn to live with the temp. sensitivity and don't look back. Use Non Magnum primers also (CCI-200 are a good choice)

PS: Whoever said 4831 is the powder for the 270 Win either passed away before more powders were available or should be locked up!

60 grains of the stuff would break 2900 fps by much, if any, out of a 24" bbl.

RL-19 or RL-22.
Have you tried H-4350? Roy is gonna hate me for this but I like IMR4831 in just about anything I shoot. (338wm down to 30-06) It seems to be the ''leatherman'', or a ''do all'' powder if you will, but it sure doesnt give the velocity of RL, and some others.
I switched from IMR 4831 to RL-19 in my 270wsm and 140gr Accubonds and got alot more speed and a little more accuracy. Win/Win situation.

I'll not hate what winmag said (he's always raggin' on me about somethin' ) as he is correct. 4831 just doesn't get the velocity that other powders do.

The disappointing thing is that back in the day when 60 gr 4831 was booked at 3012 with the 130 class bullet, I shot tons of mule deer, chucks and coyotes at all kinds of distances for many years.

I then bought a chronograph and was really bummed that I was barely breaking 2900 MV. The rifle be came suddenly useless. Once I got'r stoked up to proper velocities I was a happy camper again.

Back then Norma 205 (which is RL-22 that is swept off of the floor where 205 is made thus the temperature sensitivity) was what brought the velocity back.

Thanks for the info. I wonder how RL-17 would work. I've got some RL-22 I will try. It would be nice to pick up another 150 fps or so. I guess I always thought the short barrel was what was killing velocity not the powder.

Not necessarily the first thing that comes to mind but try some R17 or Magpro if you have it, I've put them in some cartriges that aren't what you would think of it for and have it work great, specially with that stub barrel.
Our 270 win's go to powder is 7828 but that may be way to slow for your short barrel.

Ive been having really good luck with 140gr Bergers with 59grs of H4831 with a BR primer and RP brass. 2971fps +/- 4fps 82*
No pressure signs in the least, im working on a .2grain increase till i see pressure signs. Gotten up to 59.6 and the groups arent doin so great so im goin back to 59.

I have had great success with 140 AB and 57 grains of IMR 4831 in my M-77 Ruger.
Chrono says an average of 3097 with 22" barrel. With 56.0 IMR 4831 and the 140 VLD hunting bullet, I average 3020 so far. 22 inch stock barrel The AB load is my son's favorite for his A-Bolt Stainless Stalker with CCI BR-2 primers, Win brass and 57.0 of IMR 4831.
For 150 grain VLD's my current two finalists are 57.2 grains of RL-22 and 53.2 grains of IMR 4831. Win primers and Win brass, sorted for weight. The RL-22 pushes the 150 VLD nearly 100 fps faster with nearly identical sub .5 MOA groups at 100yds. No pressure issues noted thus far.
Been loading for the .270 for 30 years and have tried more bullet/powder combinations than I care to remember. In all that time H4831 has never given me results that would make it #1 on my list of .270 "go to" powders.

Try IMR3031 43 grains. This works well for 140 interlocks. 3 shot in a dime at 100 yrds.

try IMR 3031 @ 43 grains. It is a accuracy load. You may want to look at IMR 4064.

RL19 and 22 will get you close to 3K, but RL26 is it if you want speed. With a 24" Krieger I got 3220 at 60 grains with no pressure signs. Accuracy load is 59.5 at 3175. This is with 140 Accubonds, WLR primers and 2x fired W-W brass shot over a magneto.

For accuracy I've used IMR 3031 @ 43 grains behind 140 gr Interlock SPBT. Around 2700 fps

Also, I'm working up a load for a new Weatherby in 270. It has a 26' barrel. I like the 140 gr bullets but am clue less as to where to start. I have several of the IMR powers 4350, 4064, 4831 and 3031. I am more into accuracy than speed so I'm looking for experience over the manual. Any pet loads anyone can recommend?
