Looking to puchase bipods for a range/varmint gun and a range/big game gun. Never owned a bipod before, always used shooting sticks, so I'm not sure the proper length for each application. I would like something light weight, with easy adjustable legs for un-even ground and the ability to swap between rifles (if possible). Harris makes one that looks like it would fiy the bill, but I've heard that they have had quality contols as of latley (or they are just not what they use to be). Any suggestions?

I personally wouldn't buy anything other then a Harris. Make sure it is the swivel style so you won't have to adjust the legs to cant the gun.

Im a 'Harris' man too- i had a few bolts etc vibrate loose so took an hour to un-do all the bolts etc. and loctite them in place- they haven't moved in 3 years!!!

Personally i prefer the non swivel base type. My preference is to adjust the legs for any slope etc then the bi pod is rock solid. The problem i have found with the swivel base is its very easy to move the gun on the bi-pod and so very easy to 'cant' a shot to wither side- this is obviously more a concern at longer ranges beyond your zero, which, mine are, so i use a fixed base type with adjustable legs only.

The is yours but id say go Harris and use some loctite- its all knowledge on how it woks anyway so its never a wasted hour :)

I first bought a rock mount now all I have is the Harris pivot/swivel type. I haven't had to make any modifications to my harris bi pod and I haven't had a single issue. My rock mount fell apart when I was in the field with it..

Ilove my Harris, I,ve tried others but just keep going back. As far as length goes it just depends on shooting position you plan on using it in.

harris....swivel head....notched legs....height is up to you.

swivel head: important when shooting on ground that is not level

notched legs: legs that are smooth can slip under recoil, notched legs lock in place.

I also love my Harris bipod, but I put the taller one on my gun and then the 6-9" in my pack if I need to do some real long shooting. Closer to the ground the better so to answer your question spend more money and pack more stuff not one pod for every opportunity.

Well, it sounds like the Harris is the way to go.

Looks like the "LM" leg notch will fit my needs. Not sure about the swivel, I have heard alot of folks say unless you drop another $30 on a podloc it's a pain in the arse to steady the gun.

I just bought a micro bipod lock from T-Nuts.com, seem to be well made and it was less than $10 shipped.

I probable have tried every bipod on the market. Harris is by far the sturdiest. Because I'm horseback so much of the time and on foot with a pack the remainer of time I've just switched to a Stoney Point rapid pivot bipod. It goes on and off a rifle in less than a second. I have one for prone and one for sitting - same mount on the rifle. Is it as sturdy as a Harris - NO. But it is 100 times more user friendly. I have probably got 400 rounds down the tube this summer and it's more than acceptable to me for what I intend to use it for. 600 yds is my max off a bipod then it's down on the pack with a rear bag. You can buy the adapter that goes on your upper rifle swivel separetly so in essence you can have one bipod that goes on as many rifles as you choose. Just another option for you to consider. Oh and by the way - it's less than half the price of the last Harris I bought.

I have 4 bipods.

The first one I got is a 9"-13" Harris fixed - one PITA because of the lack of swivel.

The second I have is a Rock Mount 6"-9" swivel. Not bad but not a Harris in quality, plus it's metric.

The third and forth are both 6"-9" Harris with notched legs and PodLocs - SUPERIOR and perfect for me.lightbulb

Harris swivel with the leg notches. I have a 6-9" with podloc, and an 11-23" without. You don't need the podloc, but it is a very nice addition particularily on very long shots. You can set the tension of the swivel and I've not had a problem steadying the rifle using the bipod without podloc.
