Good morning Everyone,

I have a question that has been rolling around in my head for a while, being a manufacturing guy it is probably/likely getting into minutia but I will ask anyway.

I have a chassis or three and have NOT seen a problem, but I wonder what goes into the engineering and manufacture of your chassis to prevent the thermal growth or shrinkage of the chassis from affecting the rifle system? Aluminum and magnesium grow and shrink at vastly higher rates than the steel/stainless barreled actions bolted into them and I assume that the rigidity of the actions themselves prevent any ill effects? Being that I have not seen any issues also makes me assume that the chassis is released and re-clamped several times during machining to eliminate stress in the chassis?

This has to be one of the best questions that I have been asked! I talked to our engineers and they said that the thermal expansion is not something that we have worried about because we have not seen any effect on the POI or accuracy throughout the different temperatures. With that being said, if you leave your chassis out on a winter night and then torque it down, then you will be seating your action deeper into the chassis than if you were to do it during a hot summer day when the aluminum is expanded. We have not seen or heard of action screws coming loose when you take your rifle from the house to the field so we haven't tested it thoroughly. Through the process, the chassis is clamped a couple of times so that could also eliminate some of the expansion. That is a great question though and it would be something that would be really cool to test!
 
If someone attempted to modify the inlet of one of your mg Chassis, would the risk of fire be relatively high? I had ordered an element 4.0 for a rem 700 or clone, then changed my mind and decided to go with a Bat Vampire. I know with a wood or composite stock such as manners or McMillan, changing the inlet is relatively simple, the same would go for if a person went with something like a Stiller TAC 338, that is slightly larger diameter, just widening the inlet slightly allows the use of the other action.

I myself would never do this, however it did spark the question, so I sent an email to you guys to ask if modifying the inlet was possible, and as I expected, I got a reply saying that it is not, so I sold my rem 700 chassis and purchased another element 4.0 inletted for the Vampire from Bat Machine.

My concern would come from someone that had the cnc equipment to do so and decided to give it a go. Is re-inletting one of your MG Chassis a fire risk or is it more of just compromising the design?
 
As long as they knew how to machine magnesium it wouldn't be a fire issue. The issue though is due to the design of the Bat Bumblebee, when you modify a chassis or stock it would create a weak point. The inlet that is specifically designed for the Bat Bumblebee has more material where it is needed and will ensure that the performance is going to be stellar! We do not recommend anybody modifying our chassis though!

For now, just a simple welcome to LRH and enjoy! At this time, I only have your Element on a full custom build in 2016 and am very pleased with it. I am looking forward to more of your posts.

Welcome to the forum!

Currently running a 4.0 mag after coming from a long run with mdt. I am not a fan of the accessory thumb rest at all but it's nothing to prevent me from setting up several 4.0 for others this past year. Also modified the mag release due to the protrusion constantly catching and popping the mag. I did experience the same left/right poi shift as any other non-bedded chassis over time but the 4.0 seems to be less picky about horizontal shift then my mdt's. That's using the rifle system from -10 to 100 f all year. Hunting to comps. Heavy use riding in packs etc, hiking, dirt bikes, quads, utv's, and horseback.

In the end, I am very happy with the xlr and have no regrets making the switch.

In early 2011, I think XLR was just getting going, I ended up with a Lawton single shot Cheytac action, kicker was, it had a Rem LA footprint. Not many stocks on the market for this, we enlisted XLR to make a chassis for it.
Man, did they come through, and the wait time was minimal! No extra charge for the R&D either, and it may be safe to assume that was a one of one.
 
Have you seen reliable feeding with the 700 footprint 22s in your chassis like the vudoo and bergara? Do any of your chassis have an adjustable mag catch option?
