My kids are finally getting the shooting bug. I didn't want to force it upon them, and burn them out. So I've sat patiently crossing my fingers. They've shown a little interest here and there, but the last year they've been hounding me to shoot. So we've been shooting most weekends. Went out and shot the 22lr today, and got them on their first center fire cartridge. The 224 Valkyrie was the perfect first center fire for them to shoot. No recoil, and they were able to smack pop bottles at 100 yards. Not bad for 8 year olds. Here in Az it's time to put in for elk hunts. They'll be 9 in a month, which means they can do hunter safety this year, and a year from today they get to put in for their first big game hunt. Exciting times for an eager father. Haha.

Good job dad get them out burning powder every chance ya can . It will only make things better in the long run . I do however have one word of advice and I hate to even mention this but get some ear protection for them and you . Get some walkers game ears or some sort of electronic muff . Shoot even some foam ear plugs are better than nothing . I damaged my left year two years ago while back up shooting a bear with my buddies 460. Now if I hit a nail with a hammer my ear starts ringing . You don't want to damage theirs or what you got left of yours. As I stated sorry but I believe it's worth mentioning

No better feeling than this! My son is 11 and has been shooting and hunting with me since he was 4. I still enjoy hunting with my friends but I enjoy taking my son out more than anything else anymore. I have killed plenty of stuff over the years and am taking the back seat for him the next few years.

I did bring hearing protection, but I didn't bring enough for my wife. So she got mine. I had to plug my ears. The kids had theirs in all the time (just hard to see in the photos), and my wife had hers on so she could take photos.

Edit: they didn't wear hearing protection with the 22lr, but we were shooting some old sub sonic ammo I wanted to get rid of.

Shooting and guns were never part of our family's culture as I was growing up but as an adult I picked up the shooting bug. I then realized how much we had missed out. You're kids are really lucky that you not only didn't force it on them but you were willing to make the time and patience to allow them to explore the activity on their own. Equally important is the aspect of teaching them the proper gun safety handling techniques and the ethics that go along with that. I didn't learn those things until I took the hunter education courses as an adult! Well done!

Congratulations. You will not have a blast but you are preparing the next generation to protect and fight for our Second Amendment and hunting rights. My two sons have now raised their kids in the same way. I was blessed to be with my 11 year old granddaughter when she took her best buck to date. There is nothing like it.
