Bedding 2 piece bottom metal

So I picked up a fiberglass stock on armslist for my winchester model 70. It was inletted for a featherweight and my rifle is a magnum sporter. A previous owner has messed with it, but for $65 I figured I'd give it a shot.

I opened up the barrel channel and removed some bedding material so my barreled action now fits in the stock. I plan on bedding it and have done that a few times before, so I dont see there being any problems there.

My question is about bedding the 2 piece bottom metal. The inletting is really sloppy and uneven.
Does anyone have a trick to make sure it's all level? I dont want any problems with the floor plate not closing or not staying closed when I'm done.

I plan on using acraglass gel because I already have some.

I would pillar bed it first
Then there would be no need to bed the bottom metal. I have pillar bed first then the bottom metal . I have shot before and after and seen no change with bedding the pillars and bottom metal. Bedding the bottom metal and action with no pillars helped some . I'm a firm believer in pillars . Just my opinion.
If you are set on bedding the bottom metal pillars will give a strong foundation and you can do each piece one at a time. I'm no expert

One big reason I want to bed the bottom metal is to fill in the gaps around the trigger guard.
Also, how would pillar bedding work with 3 action screws? There's nowhere to put a pillar for the middle screw, so it seems like it would need to be bedded to level out the trigger guard.

i would start by creating new action screw holes by pillar and action bedding , and fit those in first

then once the screws holes are as you want them , then clean up that bottom as a second process

the 2 pillars should hold the separate pieces square
as the foundation as stated earlier

Although you can . Simply drill out the screw hole and apply release agent to the screw , fill the screw hole with epoxy insert the screw. Once dry it will work as if it were machined .

When I bed one piece steel bottom metal, I use magnets to hold the front and rear of the metal flush with the stock. I don't see why you couldn't use the same method on a two piece setup. The magnets I use are 1/4" wide, 1-1/2" long, and 1/8" thick. They are so strong you have to handle them carefully.

I'd go with pillars first then bed the action and bottom metal
I recently did my Tikka 300wm in a laminated stock out of the box it shot 1 moa after the bedding .6moa it's a tack driver on Sambar deer
I've got to admit I put so much Deacon bedding compound in the rifle went to sleep
Some say a smear is enough but hey if a jobs worth doing give do it well.
So far it's a ripper
I say do pillars first then the action and bottom metal together next

i think your action screws are 1/4-32 super fine thread. replacing them may prove difficult. that adjustable pillar kit linked above will help with making sure you or the last guy didnt build up too much bedding and work your yourself out of threads,

The action screws were actually bottoming out. I cut 3 threads off of them and still have plenty of room.

Another problem I'm having is that the rear of the magazine box is high. The floor plate still latches, but I want to make sure it's not going to pop open on me.

If I shim up the bottom metal at the front and rear screws it works perfectly, but then the metal is about an 1/8th of an inch out past the stock. I have no room on the top end either without the tang sticking up.

So do I grind down the magazine box or build up the stock around the bottom metal or tang? Or should I just leave it as is?

shim it so it works good , then build it up from the bottom...

I actually haven't done anything yet.

Here is a picture with it shimmed up. It's not too terrible I guess.

So I guess I'll add pillars then bed the action and build up around the bottom metal. I'm not sure how the pillars will go since I dont have a decent platform on the top OR bottom to work with...

Any suggestions on what to use to build up the stock? Acraglas? Auto body filler?
