Title say's it all "Help me pick caliber for new build" I got an itch to start a new build help me pick a caliber. Average shooting distance is 700 yards and under. Below is what I currently have for calibers.

22-250 1 in 8 twist
6.5 creedmoor (daughter's rifle)
6.5-284
30-06 rem 7600 ( not going anywhere family heirloom)
338 Sherman shortmag

I think you need a 6 and/or 7mm something to round out your arsenal. Cartridges that I would look in to would be a fast twist 6mmBR. It's phenomenally accurate to the range you mentioned. Good brass, good bullets, low recoil and a wealth of loading data from the Benchrest community. I have a friend who deer hunts/target shoots with he makes 300-350yd head shots from his tower blind on "meat" does. I would almost say it out shoots both of our 6.5X284's but I ain't gonna admit that to him! I am looking to build one off a SA Savage I have.
In the 7mm area, I would like to have a 7-300WinMag., for you :) Just because, I like the 7RM and the .300WM. so much, why not put them together? With Norma or Nosler brass, a fast twist (1-8"), 28" barrel, it would be something with the 195gn projectiles.
Good luck in your search!

I'm in process of having a 7mm Mashburn built...but if I wasn't into wildcats it would be a 28 Nosler.

I think you've got a good rounded collection there. Your 22-250 with the 8 twist will do just about whatever a 6mm will do since you've got the 8 twist. Your missing a 7mm. I'm going to say a 7mm rem mag with an 8 twist to shoot 180s-197 class bullets or go 300 win mag with a 8 or 9 twist.

I had some people ask on the 338 SS so information is below on that rifle.

dont know how it shoots haven't had time to load up rounds. I built it to shoot the hammer 260gr. Straight Jacket Armory built it for me on my stiller long action with a 1 in 9.4 twist 24; Barrel with brake I maxed out Rich's reamers for the 260 grain Hammer mono. Straight Jacket tried one powder type (RL17 at 63grs) at max length and hit pressure at 2,750FPS now this is with a long mono with alot of bearing surface we are guessing if i ran 250gr bergers i could hit close to or over 3,000FPS. My plans today are to call Steve at Hammer and send the rifle to him to reload on this one because its kind of an unknown bullet in the 338 SS and as far as I am aware no one has a chamber cut as long as this one is. I have included pics of the loaded round and comparisons to other calibers . For comparision second picture is Left 6CM center 6.5PRC right 338 Sherman
