I was wondering if someone could give me a starting point for 62 gr & 64 gr btsp in 223 rem/ 5.56 NATO with AR_Comp by A!liant. The deal is they were factory pulls at deep discount from RMR. I don't know and they can't tell manufacturer. When I contacted Alliant they say they need manufacturer. These loads are just for plinking steel and occasional coyote. Weapon is a RRA 223/5.56 camber.

Thank in advance,
Gene

Gene,
I bought 1.000 of the 64gr BTSP from RMR before they started selling that mixed lot of 62 & 64 gr bullets.

I found a very happy place with 24.5gr of Varget, CCI 400 primers, in Hornady and LC brass.
I went up to 25.5gr with no excessive pressure signs, but 24.5gr was the sweet spot for both my Ruger American Ranch Rifle in 5.56 and a custom AR-15 16" in .223. Both have 1:8 twist barrels.

I seat to just the very bottom edge of the cannelure, giving me an OAL of 2.5". This will barely fit in the Ruger 5 shot mags and I have to use the ASC AR mags which will allow them to function just fine.

This load puts five rounds into 1/2" or less @ 100yds when I do my part. The RAR wears a Leupold fixed 8x with AO, and the AR-15 wears a Leupold VX-R 2-7 x 33.

So far, these rounds have accounted for one coyote and one bobcat. DRT. :D

Best wishes in your quest!

Ed

Thanks for the data. I look into that also. How did the btsp preform on yote and cat. Big holes or punch through?

.22 cal. hole on entry, 1/2" hole on exit on the coyote. I didn't get the chance to look over the cat carcass for exit wound.

The info I picked up on those bullets was that they were Federal bonded core bullets for their law enforcement ammunition, meant for barrier penetration and stopping bad guys.

The ammo reviews laud the accuracy and effectiveness even after penetrating barriers such as windshields and window glass.

This tells me that they would be great for larger varmints, hogs, and deer hunting, but not for the "red mist" effect on prairie dogs.

I was hesitant to crimp them, even though they have the cannelure, so I removed he expander ball from my sizing die and just loaded them after neck sizing. I have ~.003" neck tension with this method.

I think you'll be pleased with the bullets you got. I used the same powder charge/primer with Sierra 63gr GameKings and got nearly the same accuracy. The largest group @ 100yds with them was 3/4".
This is an "opportunistic" hunting rifle, so those groups work great for me.

Thanks for the data. I look into that also. How did the btsp preform on yote and cat. Big holes or punch through? Gene

To explain why I didn't get a chance to check the exit hole on the bobcat, here is a narrative I posted on another forum about killing the two varmints;

"I was in the back pasture at sunset, just checking things out, when I saw a really mangy Bobcat step out of the treeline and into the tall grass about 150 yards from me.
Having my trusty Ruger American Ranch Rifle with me, I took the shot, dropping him in his tracks. I rode over to him and took a close look. He was obviously very sick, just skin & bones. It was a fully mature tom, but covered in mange, ticks, and fleas. I had left my cellphone back at the house, so I took off to get it to record this "trophy"

.

When I came back into the pasture, there were three coyotes standing where the Bobcat was lying. I raised the rifle and watched as one of the bigger coyotes snatched the Bobcat up and began running with it. The other two just stared at the departing thief, so I shot the closest of them. He also dropped at the shot and the other two coyotes made away with the Bobcat carcass. So, without further adieu, my "harvest" for the day;
You should have seen the one(s) that got away.

That's a funny story. One got dinner, one away, two got dead. I was guessing federal for some reason in my head for manufacturer. Pretty much what I bought them for ****'n bullet. Half the pice of 69 gr Sierra's.
Thanks,
Gene

I bought a mess of the pulled bullets from RMR also. Great success with the following with either bullet 62 or 64gr.

25gr H4895
Fed 205m Primers
LC Brass
3000 fps
