I went with a PTG one piece bolt with tactical knob and had the smith tig weld it swept back. Went with a Saco extractor - you might consider an M16 extractor. Also replaced the firing pin with a PTG and speed lock spring. Also replaced the recoil lug with a pinned heavy duty lug. No need for an extended mag box with a 30-06. Also went with a Jewel trigger.

Hard to go wrong with any good custom match grade barrel maker. There are a number of them. I decided on a Brought 5C. 5C barrels are supposed to give you a little more velocity. I recommend a 10 twist for shooting heavier high BC bullets.

After I put a few break-in rounds through it,it will get sent H&M for Black Nitriding which is a better and tougher finish than anything out there by far and makes for little fouling and easy cleaning.

My smith called a couple weeks ago and I might be picking the rifle up this coming week. I'll give it a quick break-in and then send it in for the nitriding but I'll take pics before I do and then after pics. I don't think there are any pics of the process itself but I will show pics of the action, bolt, recoil lug etc.

I got mine back a couple weeks ago along with a couple other rifle projects. Finished up the break-in a week or so ago and just dropped them off at my smith for disassembling and shipping to H&M end of the week. Should be back a couple weeks or so later, then put back together and then load development.

Mark, is there any particular reason you left so much (literally) wiggle-room between where the objective bell meets the tube, and the reticle box? The way that's mounted would allow the heavier-weighted front end of the scope to wiggle more during recoil, instead of being more rigidly mounted, by having the front ring closer to the objective bell...

Just wondering.

Also, what is .300 Ultra Match? New caliber? Wildcat?

The 300 Ultra Match is a 300 RUM chambered with match neck and throat. It was the smith's idea to stamp it that way so anyone loading for it would know it's not a conventional chamber. It will accept factory ammo.

Sounds interesting...I understand the match (longer) throat, but what is a match neck? Is that another term for a tight-neck?

Riley, That one is the 1" V Port. It's a great brake and tames it way down but it still has a pretty good initial jolt with a mild load (90 gr) of 33 pushing 230 hybrids for break-in. I have the 7/8ths V Port on the 6.5 WSM. Even with the intial jolt, the rifles don't move much.

Gun looks great BTW. We went with the 7/8" so we could blend it to match the barrel. I was shooting at 300 yards last night with the sun low and directly behind me and i caught a glimpse of the base of the bullet on its way to the target.
