My start to long range shooting

I am new to all of this long range shooting stuff. I just started shooting past 400 yards this morning. The only long range gun that I own is a 300 WSM but it is at the gunsmith getting some things taken care of.

This morning I was shooting a 6.5 Grendel AR and my factory Remington 700 25-06 with a Hogue full length aluminum bedded stock. I started out at a lasered 425 yards making sure I had the right amount of elevation dialed in and then moved to 500. Every time that I move back further, it seems like when I look down range that I have gone FAR even though I have only gone back 100 yards. After getting the correct amount of clicks up and shooting a group, I then moved back to 600 yards and did the same. All I have to say is what a rush! Its a lot of fun having to concentrate on so many things at once to get an accurate shot. I'm hooked for sure and will probably be spending a lot of money in the future now (THANKS TO ALL OF YOU AND THIS WEBSITE!). Oh yes..haha, my wife will be thanking all of you as well . Here are the results with my 25-06. I only worked on groups with the 06 because that is what I will be hunting deer with out to 500 yards this season. Only 3 shot groups as well and prone off of a bipod.

1. 425 yards : 1.75" (3 shots)

2. 500 yards: 2.5" (3 shots)

3. 600 yards: 4.5" (3 shots)

Not too shabby for a factory gun with a stock upgrade I thought. All under MOA. Only thing that is going to get me is the wind. If you guys have any good advice or articles that I can read up on or devices that I would need to get in order to help me on this endeavor, I would greatly appreciate it.

I know 600 yards is small stuff to many of you but I guess we all have to start somewhere and I had a blast doing it.

You're doomed buddy. There are lots of guys who have spent far more who wish their rigs shot that well.

Now between 600-1000 you're going to learn just how complicated things can get, and you will be hooked for life when you start doing just as well at 1000.

It's a big challenge but it's more addicitve than golf.

Where are you in NM? I grew up near Clovis.

Wish my current 25-06 would shoot that good! My first one did, but this other one sure doesn't.
What model of 700 is yours, sporter or heavy barrel?

I like 25-06 a bunch since I own three. All shoot good but the load I worked up fits my Weatherby the best and my wife and son have to shoot that load or load there own. What type scopes do you have on your guns?

I live in Deming, NM and you do not want to live here haha! We have an old nat'l guard range out here and it goes out to 800 yds.

My 25-06 is just the a BDL sporter. It didn't start shooting like that until I put that aluminum bedded stock on there. The wood had warped on the factory stock but it didnt even shoot that good when I first got it.

In a few years, I plan on getting a long range rig built for hunting elk and deer but am still undecided on what caliber. 300 RUM, 7mm AM, 7mm RUM, 338 edge? Any suggestions?

Looking at 300 Ultra myself. Some of the 210 VLD, 220-grain matchking type bullets look awesome...

Ooops...sorry. On my 25-06, I just have a Weaver Classic 4-16x42 on it since I will only be shooting out to 500 yards with it. It is a good scope for the cost. On my 6.5 Grendel AR, I have a Leupold VX 3 4.5 to 14X50. I am using it for Coyote hunting at the moment. That 100 gr ballistic tip really does a number on coyotes. I dont keep the pelts so it doesnt matter. I just want them dead.

Next on the list, I want to get a good LR rangefinder and a good spotting scope. I am going to get this stuff first and then working on building a LR rifle.

Yep I've been to Deming. Not much there other than sand and wind.

Good place for LR shooting though with all of the public land. My next rig is going to be a 300 Rum.

I currently shoot a 7MM STW that is great for what it is, but the added energy on target at long range with the Higher Gr VLD's that you can get with the 30 caliber bullets has a lot of appeal to me.

Out to about 1200yds it should be adequate for all North American Game.

You can get some more energy out of the .338s but you pay a price for it.
