7 rum?

My 7 RUM. Stiff load of 50 BMG, 29 inch Benchmark. 180 VLDH, 3300 fps. Hard on brass. 3 firings.
I doubt you would get 3200 fps with a 195 Berger

My current go to mountain rifle here in the west is a 7RUM, 180gr Bergers at around 3150fps, shoots .4moa, 26" barrel, custom barrel contour indexed brake, Rem 700 Alaska Ti clone action and barrel, mcmillian edge stock, March 3-24x42 scoped weighting just under 8lbs. It's a dream to shoot, around a 243ish recoil. That's on 91gr of retumbo

7 RUM 26" 9 twist 143 grain Hammer Hunter with HBN 3,630fps with Reloder 26
next to no recoil with MBM brake, shoots very flat

I've been thinking about doing a big 7 of some flavor. Was curious if anyone has a 7 rum throated and actually taking advantage of the 7 rum. With a 195 curious what your velocitys actually are.

I had misgivings about the 7 RUM in the beginning because of the 7 STWs that I had based it's performance. My STW had a 31" barrel and I found it hard to believe that It could best it in a 26 to 28" barrel. It did. The main advantage to the 7 RUM is its ability to send the big 7 mm bullets down range at a higher velocity than most other cartridges in 7 mm.

All the load data that I could find for the 7 RUM showed a test barrel length of 24" and that is only good for around 50 ft/sec more than the STW. The big 7 RUM comes into its own with 28'' or more barrel because of the powder capacity. I had to work up all of my loads carefully to get the 200+ft/sec improvement with the big bullets over the STW.

Choice of powder and barrel length are the secret to performance in the 7 RUM. I also prefer to keep my loads in the 90%+ case density so the slowest powders are required and a barrel long enough to burn it. I also believe that More freebore is needed to keep the pressures down so don't infringe on the .400 freebore that the 7 rum was designed for. If loaded correctly the accuracy and pressures are great.

Not a big 7 but I do run a 7 SAUM with the 180 ELD-m. Talk about efficiency! Realistically if you run the 180 eld-m instead of the 195 you pick up velocity AND higher BC. The 195 eol is listed at G1 0.754 and G7 0.387 while the 180 eld-m is G1 0.791 and G7 0.401 With the new 190 A-tip the numbers will only be higher! Maybe do a build around that new bullet?

Hornady is well known to greatly overstate their BC's, it may be .401 at a higher velocity so they are technically partially correct but BC is and average , note how Sierra show BC for their 7mm 180;
.660 @ 1650 fps and above
.650 between 1500 ad 1650 fps
.610 @ 1500 fps and below

It would be single fed on a defiance and a 30 inch tube.. I would almost bet I could shoot my 230s out of my rum over 3200 and ot would be fine.
