28 Apr 2019 - Recap of the URSA 3000 Yard Challenge (2019) (by Facilitator)

Read the 27 Apr 2019 recap to find out how we got here.

Again decent weather, today with little wind. Based on qual results from Saturday, we had two shooters, Chris and Kurt. After each taking three practice shots, they engaged steel at 2630 yards. Neither shooter got the required at-least-4-in-10 hits to move to the next distance, so the event ended with Kurt Stone the Winner with 3 hits. Congratulations! [LV dominated with 2 winners and a runner-up during the two days.]

See the competitor's rifle descriptions below and see pics of the two events in our Gallery - https://www.unlimitedrange.org/gallery.html

A big thank you to those shooters that honored us with their presence, especially Lynn Dragoman who was my sole "helper" hanging steel. Thanks also to those shooters that helped with the take down and vehicle loading. Appreciated!

Finally, this was the third consecutive 3K held in SoCal and the 27th event held in SoCal since the beginning in May of 2015, four years. Regrettably, for lack of anyone stepping up to handle storing and transporting gear, there will be no SoCal events in the foreseeable future. The steel and IRIS systems have be transferred to Lynn. I'm hoping Lynn can find venue for the 2020 3K in NorCal – he was the only shooter that came down from NorCal. Lynn has been THE stalwart since the very beginning and I praise him endlessly. Thank you, sir, you are the absolute real deal!

27 Apr 2019 - Recap of the SoCal Apr '19 (monthly) event (by Facilitator)

Decent weather (temps) and varying wind conditions for this "monthly" event and qualification session for the 2019 3K. During practice for the qual (for the 2080 record round, up to 7 shots), Chris scored a cold bore hit – excellent! Six shooters qualified to shoot the record round at 2080 yards (scored at least 3 hits in 10 shots at this normal first distance) – Bill, Brian, Carlos, Chris, Kurt, and Scott. Chris scored 5 hits in 8 shots and become the first 3K-qualified shooter. During record round (at 2080) Kurt also scored 5 hits in 8 shots and became our second 3K-qualified shooter. At 2080 two shooters scored 4 or more hits in 10 shots and advanced to shoot the 2630 yard target (Bill and Kurt). There was a tie at 2630, which was settled in a sudden-death shoot-off. Kurt was the winner, Bill the runner-up. Congrats to both!

The winner and runner-up are out of Sin City (Las Vegas) and both were shooting .375 CTs. Kurt's rifle was a build from Vestal's Gunsmithing & Custom Rifles (VA) that he bought off of Robert Wilson (who was unable to attend). That build includes Stiller TAC 408 action, Rock barrel, Mirage URL chassis, Steiner m5Xi 5-25x56 scope with Ivey adjustable mount (mil) on 35 MOA rail. Kurt was shooting 377 gr Cutting Edge MTACs. Bill's rifle was a build from Dane Miller Rifles/DMR (Las Vegas). That build in based on a Desert Tech HTI with Bartlein barrel and US Optics B-25 5-25x56 scope on Cold Shot's 0-150 MOA adjustable base. Bill was shooting Warner Tool/WTC 361 gr Flat Lines.

Chris (our first 3K-qualified shooter) was shooting his own-smithed rifle with BAT CT action, Rock Creek barrel, McMillan Tooley MBR stock, and March 8-80x56 scope on Cold Shot's 0-150 MOA adjustable base. Chris was shooting 400 gr Cutting Edge Lazers.
