Just a note. I also own two 20 inch 5.56 and I can testify as to pressure differences because of the chamber size between 5.56 and smaller tight .233.

5.56 can use more powder and get higher velocity, but I never got the accuracy until I started buying high quality stainless barrels like my 24 inch Shilen match grade.

So I put ar-15's in two classes the close in defense with dot type non magnified optics. All built on you sub $1200 off the shelf mill spec barreled 11, 14.5, 16, maybe 20 inch. Then you have the other group who actually use AR's for competition, paper punching, and hunting.

From my chrono testing 16 inch is about 200 fps slower than 20 inch barrels and as much as 400 feet slower than full 24 inch.

I've also gotten away from threaded end barrels. because a 16 inch with a brake or flash hider is actually close to 18 inches. So why not just buy a 18 or 20 inch crowned barrel?
