Ring Position

I am mounting a leupold 8-25*40 on my savage 10FP with a Farrell base. My question is this. I can put the front ring all the way back against the adjustment housing, this leaves about 2.5 inches of tube open until the bell starts to open it up, or i can put the ring in the forward most cross slot which will only leave about .5-.75 inches of tube. Where is the best place for the front ring. Against the housing will help with recoil, but a 308 doesnt have much to begin with.

You want your rings as wide as you can get them as a general rule of thumb.
