Hi,
Soon 3 years with the Sako TRG-22 in 308 Win. Have been shooting mainly Norma Diamond Line 168 (coated Sierra MK's) and Scenar 155's that I have moly coated myself. Mainly practicing at the range (100, 200, and 300 meters) but also used it for shooting steel up to 600 meters. Now, the 308 is not very thrilling when it comes to long range performance. Therefor I'm thinking about rebarreling this rifle (I have a very competent gunsmith close by) in a caliber which offers long range capacity both for target shooting but also hunting.
I will use the gun mostly at 300-600 meters but want it to perform at 1000 also. The hunting aspect basically only includes roe deer which typically never exceed 60 lbs, so I don't need any 338 Lapua or similar dragon slayer. I need something that fits in the existing TRG magazine and I don't want to open up the bolt face too much (but WSM bolt face will work fine). I do like Lapua brass so what I immediately thought of was the 260 or maybe the AI version. Another candidate is 7 WSM/SAUM but then Laupa brass is of course out of the question (but Norma brass ain't too bad either...) but I haven't checked if it would work in the magazine yet. I could also fancy the 6,5x47 Lapua with its excellent brass, as I have used that in an custom rifle a few years ago. As for bullets, I'd like to use A-Max or Bergers for everything.
Maximum magazine length is 75 mm (2.95"). I plan on finishing the barrel at 26" with a "TRG profile" and use a brake.
Any caliber ideas? I know there's loads of knowledge and experience on this forum, so I am really looking forward to any response that can help me in the right direction.
