I would like to give checkering a try so if anyone has any old tools they are no longer using I would be interested in them

you can make your own, tool steel, a checkering file, a standard file, a torch and a can of oil

make sure steel is soft enough to shape with the file, goal is to bend the round into the general shape of the checkering file. File the end of your steel to whatever your checkering angle is 60° 75° and 90° are common. make teeth by running the steel checkering file in each side, get it glowing then quench it hard.

moved shops and can't find my carbide tools now but here's an old odd lot dembart next to a bad homemade.

the book the final touch is one of the few actually very useful how to books available in gunsmithing

Very useful information thank you, I believe I have all these things in the garage I'll give it a go. Thanks again

I have some that I haven't touched for quite a while and I didn't use them much. I'll take a look at what I got and let you know.

BTW, I tried my hand at making a stock and it turned out pretty nice, I used buffalo horn to make the forend cap and grip cap

I'm keeping mine.......best cure for insomnia ever made! 😆
Good luck in your search and endeavors!
