Hi,
I am an older guy that bought his first center fire rifle at the age of 40. I bought a Remington 700 in 270. It has been my main hunting rifle for 18 years. I have many more rifles now. I like to reload. There is something very satisfying about making something with my own hands. I am wanting to learn to shoot out to 1000 yards. I am ok out to about 250 at present from a homemade bench. I found this site looking for answers to questions about cartridges and long range set ups. I seek wisdom. And I wouldn't mind learning how to shoot an elk in the eye at 600 yards.
Thanks for the chance to learn.

Thanks for the hellos,
I am happy to find this site. Lots of info here. I am gonna try to load some 180 grain bullets for my 270.
The plan is to hunt with them. I am trying to post pictures of the assorted projectiles I have tried over the years.

What twist is your 270. That bullet may not work if it is a 1 in 10. 270 has been with me many years i really like it as a hunting round. Sadly the round has been neglected for long rang shooting. Please don't let this discourage you. You may have to go to either a 6.5 caliber or 7mm for long range. Hope your 270 has a 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 twist.

Your 270 if it is a 1 in 10 may shoot up to a 160 grain. Nosler makes a partition, but you want to long range shoot though. There is an aerodynamic 145 grain that will fly flat though, and has a high bc. Good luck and have fun with your quest.

I suspect it is 1:10...not 100% sure.
Gotta try it anyway...done bought the bullets. May be 3 weeks before I punch holes in paper...will post results here. Thanks. Lee

Welcome!

As a novice myself, I have found "Applied Ballistics" by Bryan Litz and the YouTube series Sniper 101 by Tibosaures Rex to be great resources. The Sniper 101 series takes a bit to get thru all the material, but well worth the time investment.

Loaded 130 grain Sierra bullets, 51 grains IMR 4831, going 2750 or so. Three shot groups were better at 100 yards than at 50. Second shot hit this tank at 400 yards.
