Any advice would be greatly appreciated . Im from Arkansas and plan on going to Colorado this October for an elk hunt. I plan on camping in a tent. I was wondering what area would be the best to try out. Im in pretty good shape so I will defiantly be going the extra mile to get to the animals. just need some advice on how to select a location to start.

Thank you guys for your time,

Kyle Taylor

Some years Colorado elk hunting is great just about anywhere it's legal to hunt. Other years you can't find an elk within Colorado's borders. If this is your first elk hunt in Colorado, I'd suggest you make it a learning experience. Depending on what type of tent you have (a canvas wilderness wall tent complete with wood stove vs a nylon one man outside frame variety) you may find Colorado's weather to be a challenge. The area around Leadville, Co. for example, can get a lot of snow in October and freezing temperatures are not uncommon.
Another issue with Colorado is that public land abuts private land in some very curious patterns and you might find yourself on public land taking a shot at an elk on private land resulting in a successful kill that you can't claim.
My best advice would be to either go with someone who has a lot of experience hunting Colorado or spend the money for a guided hunt your first time out.

If your going to go the "extra mile", I would suggest planned routes with GPS before you kill that giant bull in the backcountry. Have lots of options. Packing out a bull elk is tough work. Even tougher when your in a new area trying to find your way out. Good luck. I love drop camp hunts!!
