Nushagak... they must have done something dumb as those bears should be so full of record breaking salmon run that they can barely waddle.
I get palmer hay flats. I've been in los anchorage for a couple weeks for post op and to keep my leg moving I take the rat dog to dig mice at palmer hay flats. It feels like your still on the outskirts of town and lulls you in. Doesn't mean bears aren't out and about on the regular. Last few times we were armed with little more than a 22 pistol, definitely easy to be brown bear complacent out there.
