I was always interested in the "BATTLESHIPS" in the WWIII. The IOWA Class was at the top of the list for Fighting from the WWII to the Gulf Wars. The Main Battleships went through many changes over the years. It amazes me the Ship can fire a 2,700 lb AP projectile at hit something at 20,000 yds away. (now not exact firing) they had 16"50 Cal which is a 16" ID and 66 feet long barrel. The way that hey calculated the Firing solution from the Bow of the ship with the ships' speed direction, the target speed direction, time to target and Coriolis of the earth. They did this with mechanical devices and fired over the horizon.

Sure makes you think about what we have today with a Leica, Revic, Vortex Laser Range Finders, Kestrel Ballistics & Environment Solutions and a Garmin ETREX GPS to give us a firing solution for hunting and target shooting. We don't go anywhere without a RF with Ballistics and especially a GPS!
AND just think if you are a shooter for the Military, you can hit a moving target in a jeep at 1K going 20mph (or a Prong Horn Running) NOT us Hunters or Military would more use the Ballistic app for WIND and not the animal running. with the correct equipment and knowledge/training/experience.

This is a good article if you want to read.

USS Missouri

First picture is part of the targeting system.. The tour guide explained when the Missouri was brought back into service for the 1st gulf war they were going to update the targeting system but choose the OEM 1940's system because they couldn't come up with anything better! They also had to reach out to Korean War vets to train sailors on the targeting system. Worth the flight to Hawaii just to see the Missouri!

When you ahoot at a target you can't see over the horizon, that is remarkable.
Did they use coordinates from air recon?
It a lot of MATH and having the RangeFinder located high on the MAST of a ship.
