We set out this weekend to get Hunter a doe, but not just any doe one further than 200 yards away. He had already killed one a couple of years ago at about 200, so we wanted to push it out a little further. He had already gotten a couple earlier this year so we were not in a hurry just to get some more meat for the freezer. Saturday morming we didn't see anything, just an empty field. Later we helped his Pepaw cut fire wood and on our way back through the corner of the field we noticed 3 does at the far edge feeding. They didn't seem to mind us driving the tractor and 4-wheeler through the field and they just kept eating. We didn't have his rifle with us at the time it was back at the cabin. We returned to the cabin and helped Pepaw load the wood into his truck, and after the work was complete, I suggested we get our orange on and head back to the field to see if they were still feeding. Low and behold they were, so we climbed up to the first level of the stand to where he could lay down for a prone shot. I ranged the littlest doe at 335 yards, the other 2 were slightly obstructed by some tree limbs. He knew what to do but I told him use the 300 yard reticle and aim just a hair high just to be sure. We have wind flags in the field and they were motionless, so no worries for wind. I said if you are rock solid take the shot..... boom.....the doe dropped in her tracks with a high shoulder hit from a .308 168gr BT.
