Hello everyone! Long time lurker, first time posting on the forum.
A little about me.
I've been shooting since I was young, but never long range stuff until about 2 years ago. My current rig is a Savage 12 BVSS in .223 topped with a Nightforce 12-42 Benchrest. I know I know, you can't shoot a .223 far but I have successfully taking it to 750 yards consistently. A drop in a bucket compared to most guys on here. Hopefully I'll have something bigger before long to go further :D.
Just here to learn!

Scott

Scott, welcome to Long Range Hunting. You have a good rig for getting started, also you can switch the barrel and bolthead on your Savage and shoot another cartridge out over 1000 yards.

Thanks for the welcome Don. That's what I have learned about Savages. Never have personally done it but it seems pretty strait forward. I'm a mechanically inclined so shouldn't be a problem. I was wondering about changing it to 7mm-08 or 243. I had a 243 round I tried in the magwell to see if they would fit, but no luck. Is there a fix to this?

Scott

Scott, does the magwell stay in the stock or is the mag box attached to the action? Either way you will have to make a change to feed the .308 case family. I'm not sure because I've never had a .223 Savage other then the Axis which is a different action and mag feed completely. I think they make them ( the one you have) where you could change a mag part on the 4.27"action or the magwell on the 4.40" action. I should have asked this before now, it just popped into my head, is your Savage a centerfeed or a staggerfeed?

Thanks Don!
It's been a while since I've had the stock off, but I think it stays in the stock. It has a blind mag without a hindged floor plate. The manufacturing date is 2001 if that makes a difference. It's a stager feed.
