F150 Question

I have a weird F-150 question. I have a 2017 F150 supercrew xlt 3.5 eco with 106k miles on it. It gets serviced at the Ford stated intervals. It had the cam phaser issue and was fixed last year.

So, it is a Ford. Stuff will break. I owe on it for 2 more years which is probably 50k more miles. Still, I like this truck. I'm 52. Thinking 55-60 retirement roughly.

Somewhere around retirement a BEV SUV probably takes miles off this thing.

I'm at crossroads in my decision making. Should I be thinking new-to-me truck in a couple years as my retirement truck or keep this one paying for stuff that breaks as it breaks. I hate buying another used truck. There has been no advancement in Ford trucks in my mind since I got this one, but that likely means I would run this to 350k-400k mi and 25 years. Is that possible? Can I keep it in top form for under $5000 a year on average?

My problem is I don't think I want any of the new feature content after 2017!

What have you done working through these kinds of issues?

The reason I think about this now is I'm thinking through suspension replacement (dampers, leveling & rr shocks), bed cover, tool boxes, etc that are all truck specific.

I have a 2006 F150 King Ranch 4X4. Get it service at the dealer and as far as stuff breaking I did not experience that. I have broken stuff myself seeing that it is my everything do all truck from camping, fishing and hunting. After 19 years and a couple of hundred thousand miles I'm ready to sell it as I have lost confidence in it. A couple of times my shifting gear would lock up in park and it did it twice . Also the moon roof begin to leak after a rain storm. I've never like moon roofs but It came with the truck at an incredible sales price because it was on clearance to make room for new inventory. I even replaced the interior 5 years ago because I sucked at maintaining and conditioning the leather seats. The new interior cost me 3 grand but was well worth it and I fell in love with the truck all over again until last year that I begin to have issues with the gears and moon roof.

I am going to custom order a truck but in order to get what I want like no moon roof, a 6 1/2 ft. bed and 4X4 I have to get a Lariat. I wanted to get a Tremor but I cannot get it with a 6 1/2 ft bed. I wanted to get a King Ranch but they won't let me order without a moon roof. I was going to get the Platinum but I need to get it with 22" wheels. So many stupid restrictions on the packages available. I wanted to get the tires with 18" wheels because I often fish and drive on the beach in South Padre Island so I let the air out of the tires or when I'm in West Texas around Big Bend and Terlingua when hunting I need the let the air out in the mountains when off road.

This time I'm getting the Power Boost full Hybrid with the 7.2 KW inverter. I like the twin turbo 3.5 EcoBoost engine that came with my Class B RV a Coachmen Beyond Ford Transit Van. The engine is a beast even though it is a V6.

To answer your question I never did any of the things you asked about other than just get better tires and a K & N air filter system and Flow Tech Headers immediately after purchasing my truck. I like to keep vehicles for a minimum of 10 years or longer. I feel it is a lot less expensive paying for repairs when the need arises than having payments on a monthly basis for several years. Here are a before and after picture of my custom interior I got 5 years ago. I would make the improvements you want.

Nice leatherwork! What did that set you back?

You make some good points. That is why I like my truck. Things like sunroof are cool until they leak! That said, all moon roofs leak. They have a drain system. I wonder if your leak is really that the drain has clogged with leaves or something.

$3000 for the full interior front and back.

I would sell it. The eco boost won't last much longer. After around 120K it just doesn't make it. Great motor until then, with a lot of power.

Sell it. And get something that will last longer

I was in similar thought process with my 2015 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 a couple of years ago. Bought a GMC Sierra AT4 as my retirement truck but kept the Ram for yard work, etc. GMC stranded myself and wife with a fuel pump control module. Towed to dealer. No parts so it sat for 30+ days while I harassed GMC customer service - no rental, no loaner. Good thing I kept the Ram. Service writer pointed to all the GM products in service area waiting on parts, transmission replacement, and engine swaps. Ford dealer same. Toyota pulling motors out of new Tundras. Finally got the GMC repaired and sold it. Bought a used Subaru Ascent and been running it to PRS matches, etc. I am not paying big money for unreliable trucks anymore.
