Best book? For a first time trainer?.. Larry Mueller speed train your bird dog.
Do not. Do not use wolters book.
Another resource is navhda. North american versatile hunting dog association. They put out a goodbook as well.

I couldn't agree more regarding Wolter's books....all of them. I used one of his books on my first bird dog back in the 80s. In my opinion he did a complete disservice to first-time trainers by saying a dog should be at an exact level of training at an exact date. Once I relaxed about pushing my dog so much, it became much more amenable to training. And training became orders of magnitude more enjoyable for me. I'm not into book banning, but his gets me closer....
