I was wondering what you consider a good knife brand? I am looking to purchase matching knives for my brother, dad, nephews and myself. I wish I could to have them made, but that's out of my price range.
So I thought I would ask my Long Range brothers what they use.

Not sure what you're after, but I butcher lots of farm animals and I ended up buying 4 different victorinox knives which I use. They were recommended by 2 guys who have both worked in commercial meat processing facilities, the last knives i will have to buy, from fish to pigs to deer, cattle, I got em all covered

Thanks for the info. I am thinking a general purpose hunting knife or at least for myself. I like quality products and willing to pay for them. Yet also like a bargain when I can. I know you pay for the name for some. I am just not very knowledgeable on knife makers.
 
You should check out bladeforums.com.
They're kind of the longrangehunting.com of the knife world. Lots of good information, and decent amount of garbage information.
Lots of custom guys that make some really cool stuff and it's not as bad as price wise as you might think.
How much do you want to spend? There is cheap stuff like cold steel that's actually pretty decent steel. Benchmade and Knives of Alaska are a step up and can be found a sporting goods stores. Those run between 80 and 200 ish depending on what you want.
You can go simple 440c, or d2. Aeb-l is one of my favorite stainless steels and takes a really fine edge. I don't care as much for the s series stainless 30 or 90.
I use my own 1084 knives, but they'll rust if you don't take care of them.

Thanks for the reply. I will check the site out. I just have no clue what is a quality knife. I am looking to spend $100-200 range. I have seen some really nice customs, but they started at $500and went up.
 
You can buy some nice customs in the 100-200 dollar range, heck I'd build you a few if I had the time, but I got a pile of nieces and nephews I have to get taken care of.
go to the "knife makers for sale area" in the second section down. Go to "for sale:fixed blades" You can buy some really nice stuff, from some really good guys there.
 
I'm waiting to gain classified privileges to sell some Winchester and Remington knives as well as Case and Camilius. They will appear at some point in classifieds, part of a large collection of folding and fixed blade sporting knives I have. A lot aren't new per say but still new and in original boxes. Dave
 
I'll second the benchmade for everyday carry use and retouching the edge to near factory is very good. I make fixed blade hollow ground hunters for myself and family. Really hurts when you loose your everyday carry...:(
 
I must be cleared to use classifieds this morning, Will post up some pretty nice knives with actual collectors value, I carry a stag handle Remington bullet knife lock open for hunting and dressing game. Post up after doctors visit this morning.
 
I have several Guild Member handmades. Pendelton..Gaston..Herron and all sorts of Queen made stuff Tuna Valley etc. They are really nice but not cheap!
